Jensen Leads to 9-8 Defeat of SUU

Cedar City, Utah (April 9, 2002)--Speed by Cameron Coughlan and Doug Jackson and power by Dave Jensen lifted BYU to a 9-8 victory Tuesday over Southern Utah.

Coughlan scored the game-winning run in the eighth when he hit a one-out double and was singled in two batters later by Rob Itri.

"These were clutch hits that gave us a two-run cushion we ended up needing," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "We tried to take advantage of their pitcher's slower delivery to open it up in the first and second innings."

Jackson got BYU's first-inning three-run rally going with a lead-off walk and then stole second. Coughlan then drew a walk and Jensen singled in Jackson. Coughlan scored off Itri's sacrifice fly. Jensen then stole second in the first inning, advance to third on a wild pitch and scored on Lars Birkeland's groundout to first.

In the second inning BYU added another three runs. Ranger Wiens was hit by a pitch, stole second and advance to third on a fielding error on Han Yi's at bat. Jackson singled in Wiens as Yi advance to third. Jensen singled through the right side to drive in Yi and Jackson.

Yi played right field due to the absence of Matt Carson and the previous day's injury to Ryan Chambers. Defensively Coughlan returned to left field from second and Itri returned to second from third where Kevin Bills started.

Bills drove in Birkeland in the third to give BYU a 7-0 lead before the T Birds responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of that inning with a two-run single from Aaron Lancaster.

The Cougars, now 14-18-1 overall, got good pitching performances from starter Ryan Adams and James Ray. Adams improved his record to 3-4, allowing only three hits in six innings and logged six strikeouts. Ray picked up his second save of the season when he stopped SUU's four-run rally in the seventh and finished the game.

The T-Birds closed the score to 8-7 in the seventh thanks to a two-run double by Lancaster, a double by Bryan Ball and a single by McKay Wilkerson.

"Ryan (Adams) pitched very well and James (Ray) finished nicely," said Law. "We battled hard offensively and we held on at the end. We tried to give the some of our players an opportunity to fill in for Chambers and perhaps Matt (Carson) and they did fine."

SUU, now 5-22, plays two more games against BYU on May 6-7. T-Bird catcher Chris Nelson was hit three times by Adams' pitches, including two sliders.

The Cougars are next in action on Thursday afternoon to start a three game series at the University of New Mexico.
