Aztecs Claim Pair

SAN -- A double whammy came Thursday night as BYU lost twice to San Diego State, 12-10 in the completion of a suspended baseball game and 10-2 in regulation.

A ninth-inning double play was the death knell in BYU's suspended game as No. 28 San Diego State won in the completion of a game started last month in Provo.

The Cougars, now 16-21-1 overall and 9-7 in the Mountain West Conference, rebounded for a while after the completion of the suspended game. BYU jumped out to a 1-0 lead it held until the fourth inning of the regulation game.

Cameron Coughlan scored both of BYU's runs, once in the first and again in the ninth. After Coughlan beat out an single to the pitcher in the first, stole his 18th stolen base and advance to third on the overthrow. He then scored on a wild pitch by Chris Dunwell.

Teammate Matt Carson got hit by a pitch in the first, his ninth time this season, to tie a school record of being hit by a pitch 25 times in a career.

In the second inning BYU stranded runners on the corners.

Cougar starting pitcher Jeff Mousser struck out four Aztecs in as many innings until SDSU got to him in the six-run fourth with six hits to claim a 6-1 lead. BYU out-hit SDSU, 10-9, in the complete game.

Mousser, who took the loss for a 6-3 record, was replaced by Scott Koffman.

In the sixth inning it looked like BYU had Dunwell on the ropes with the bases loaded and two out, but then Coughlan popped up. In the bottom of that frame SDSU erupted with four more runs off two hits to make the score 10-1.

Dunwell, whose record improves to 7-3, was replaced by a pair of relievers beginning in the seventh. In the ninth Coughlan raced for a triple and scored off Dave Jensen's single.

However, the Aztecs had enough momentum from earlier in the night to secure the win and improve their record to 31-13 and 13-3.

The evening began with SDSU's victory in the suspended game.

With two men on and no outs, Cougar centerfielder Doug Jackson grounded into a double play at third base. The first two BYU batters, Lars Birkeland and Ranger Wiens, got aboard with singles to centerfield off ace reliever Royce Ring.

Ring struck out Coughlan to end the suspended game 18 minutes after it started--actually three hours and 41 minutes of play dating back 25 days ago when SDSU left Provo with an 11-10 lead to catch an airline flight.

In California as the visitor, the Aztecs added one run in the top half of the ninth when Anthony Gwynn hit a one-out double to center and scored on Taber Lee's single up the middle. Jackson's throw from center was off line and the speedy Gwynn, son of future Aztec head coach Tony Gwynn, scored.

The double, single and then a walk chased Cougar reliever James Ray from the mound and he was relieved by Sam Fernley. Fernley got the next batter to fly out to center and closed the inning with a ground out.

Ring picked up his 12th save, continuing to lead the nation in that category. Neither team made a starting lineup change from when the game was suspended from March 23.

At the game last month in Provo, BYU led 9-5 before SDSU scored six runs in the eighth-inning. The winning pitcher in the game was Joe Carque, whose record improved to 6-1, while Ray took the loss to make his record 0-1. The victory in the suspended game completed a three-game sweep over BYU with the Aztecs as the visiting team.

The two teams continue the scheduled three-game series in San Diego with an evening game on Friday and an afternoon game on Saturday. Both games will be broadcast live in Utah Valley over KOVO Radio (960 AM) and on the San Diego State website on the Internet.
