Tourney Rested For Sabbath, Rematch Monday

Los Angeles, Calif. (June 1, 2002)--For the Sabbath, the NCAA Baseball Regional will be rested at Dedeaux Field because of BYU.

BYU eliminated a pair of teams Saturday, beating Cal State Northridge in the nightcap, 7-2, to earn a rematch on Monday against USC at noon PDT. The Cougars have had NCAA baseball tournaments rested in 1994 and 1979 because of the school's policy to not play on Sunday. BYU did not advance to the College World Series in 1958 and 1961 when the NCAA did not have the Sunday provision in place, although the Cougars had qualified.

The Cougars, now with a 31-30-1 record, put themselves in position to play CSUN with a 12-5 victory earlier in the day by beating the University of Maine. USC, 36-22, advanced to the championship with a 7-5 victory over CSUN in game two on Saturday.

"We are playing outstanding, sound, fundamental baseball," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "I am planning on playing 18 innings of baseball on Monday."

Matt Carson, on the bench for the first game because of his knee injury, hit a sac-fly to score Doug Jackson in the first inning to give BYU a 1-0 lead over the CSUN Matadors. Then Rob Itri banged a two-run homer to bring in Dave Jensen for a 3-0 lead.

Ryan Chambers doubled as the leadoff batter in the second and he advanced to third as the centerfielder mishandled the ball. Chambers scored on a wild pitch.

Southpaw Jeff Stone stopped CSUN with the bases loaded when Ryan Haag struck out looking to end the third. The Matadors returned the favor and escaped a bases-loaded jam when Carson struck out to close the bottom of the third.

Jake Stubblefield doubled down the rightfield-line to score Itri in the third, lifting BYU up 5-0. With no outs and two on after Itri scored, Lars Birkeland attempted a sac-bunt which resulted in a doubleplay. But Ranger Wiens laced a single to right field to score Stubblefield.

Stone set the Matadors down in order in the fourth, striking out the first two. CSUN scored its first run in the fifth when Haag drew a lead-off walk, stole second and advanced to third when on the catcher's errant throw, then scored on the ensuing groundout. Stone's second walk of that inning also resulted in a run when Tim Arroyo drove in Eric Verbryke with a single up the middle, making the score 6-2.

CSUN carried that momentum into the bottom of the fifth, getting the Cougars out in order.

In the sixth BYU picked up a run when Jackson was hit by a pitch an advanced to second on a passed ball. Jensen was then intentionally walked for the second time in the game, bringing up Carson. The gimp-walking Carson drilled a two-out RBI single to right. CSUN dodged further damage when BYU struck out with the bases loaded.

When Stone hit two consecutive batters in the seventh, he was replaced by fellow lefty James Ray and Matt Ward. Ward retired the Matadors three- Up, three-down in the seventh. Ward was replaced by Tyler Dabo in the ninth. With the victory, Stone moved into third place with 28 career victories at BYU.

"Our defense played outstanding and made a couple of key defensive double plays," said Stone.

Earlier in the day, the first and third corner combination manifested itself again with Cameron Coughlan drawing a walk and advancing to third on Jensen's single to right field in the first inning. Jake Stubblefield drew a one-out walk to load the bases after Jensen stole second. Coughlan gave BYU a 1-0 lead off Itri's groundout to first.

Wiens turned a double play to help Jason Garcia escape a jam which had two Black Bears on base with one out.

The Cougars stranded two runners in scoring position the next two innings. Wiens got a two-out double in the second.

Coughlan's speed helped him beat out an infield single to short and he stole second, his 30th theft of the year, and then advanced to third.

With men on the corners, Maine avoided a double play to score its lead-off runner in the third to tie the score, 1-1.

Wiens continued to spark the Cougars by delivering his second double to score Birkeland in the fourth inning. Birkeland put himself in scoring position by stealing second and BYU went up 2-1.

A pair of two-baggers down opposite lines gave Maine its first lead as Pat Tobin doubled in lead-off batter Joe Drapeau. Tobin later scored on a sacrifice fly. Garcia loaded the bases before he was replaced by Scott Koffman with two outs. Koffman walked his first batter, forcing in a run to give the Black Bears a 5-2 lead as they batted around in the fourth.

With no outs in the fifth, Itri delivered a two-run double down the leftfield line to score Coughlan and Jensen. Chambers then singled to left to bring in Stubblefield to tie the score at five-all. Itri scored on Mike Collar's wild pitch to put BYU up 6-5. Wiens cranked a single to score Kevin Bills from second and it drove Collar out of the game, behind 7-5 with one out. By the time the fifth was over for BYU, it had scored seven runs on five hits in batting around to take a 9-5 lead.

Koffman walked the first two batters in the bottom of the fifth, then got out of the jam when Wiens turned a double play.

BYU had lost in 12 innings to No. 17 USC on Friday. Fans can listen to a live audiocast of the rematch between BYU and USC at www.usctrojans.com or read a live webcast.
