Deming named WCC Player of the Week
SAN MATEO, Calif. – BYU third baseman Austin Deming has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performance versus Utah and UNC Greensboro at Miller Park last week. He joins teammate Cole Gambill, who received the same honor the previous week from the WCC.
Deming, a senior from Santa Clara, Utah, led the Cougars to a 3-1 record, including a series sweep (14-8, 19-8, 13-11) of the Spartans.
In four non-conference games, he hit .706 (12 for 17), had 4 home runs, 4 doubles, scored 11 runs and had 15 RBI. He totaled 30 bases with an OBP of .737 and a slugging percentage of 1.647.
Deming hit safely in all four games, including multiple hits in three of the four outings. In game three of the UNCG series on Saturday, Deming hit a two-out grand slam in the seventh inning that proved to be the game winner and clinch the series sweep.
Through 38 games of the 2023 season, Deming leads BYU in nearly every offensive category, including batting average (.436), runs (36), RBI (50), doubles (10), home runs (16), total bases (106) and slugging percentage (.964).
The WCC Player of the Week Award is the second of Deming’s BYU career. He also earned the honor last year on May 9 as a junior, on his way to being selected First Team All-WCC by the league’s coaches.
BYU returns to conference play this week with a three-game series versus Portland, April 27-29, at Miller Park.
All three games will be broadcast live on the BYU Radio App and simulcast on 107.9 in the northern Utah market. In addition, all three games will air live on the BYUtv App, with Friday and Saturday’s games simulcast on BYUtv.
