BYU to host Utah on Tuesday at Miller Park
PROVO, Utah — BYU baseball will open a seven-game home stand at Miller Park beginning April 18 in a midweek game versus rival Utah. The first pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. MDT.
BROADCAST. The game will be broadcast live on the BYU Radio App and BYU Radio 107.9 FM in the northern Utah market, with Greg Wrubell on the call. BYUtv will also broadcast the game live on the BYUtv App, with Dave McCann and Gary Sheide providing play-by-play and analysis.
SERIES HISTORY. The Cougars and Utes have previously met 376 times in baseball since 1948 (first year of complete season records), with BYU holding a 249-126-1 series advantage. The first recorded intercollegiate athletic event at BYU was a baseball game between then Brigham Young Academy and the University of Utah in the spring of 1895.
The two schools are tied with a record of 16-16 in the 32 games played since 2012, when the universities joined different conferences. Home field has proven to be a slight advantage as BYU is currently 9-6 (.600) at Miller Park and Utah is 10-7 (.588) in Salt Lake City.
THE PREQUEL. BYU won the first of a three-game season series with Utah, 7-0, on March 14 at Miller Park. The Cougar pitching staff held the Utes to just one hit in the shutout victory, while the offense scored seven runs on nine hits.
UTAH REVIEW. The Utes enter Tuesday’s game with an 13-21-1 overall record, having dropped a three-game series over the weekend with Cal (2-3, 13-0, 8-11). Utah is 5-14-1 in road games during the 2023 season.
COUGAR REWIND. BYU is 14-20 on the season and has won five of its previous seven games, including back-to-back series victories over USF (6-2, 5-15, 15-6) and Santa Clara (6-11, 13-8, 5-4) with a midweek victory over Utah Tech (8-5) in between. The Cougars are 8-4 on the year in games played at Miller Park.
ON THE HILL. Junior right hander Carter Smith (1-2) is scheduled to start for BYU in what will be a staff pitching day. Smith has appeared in 11 games with three starts and has logged 13.1 innings with 10 strikeouts.
Utah will start sophomore righty Cam Day who has appeared on the mound in 10 games for the Utes. He is 3-3 on the year has thrown 34.2 innings with 37 strikeouts.
UP NEXT. Following the Utah game, BYU will host a three-game, non-conference series with UNC Greensboro on April 20-22 at Miller Park. The Cougars will then return to WCC play with three games with Portland in Provo, April 27-29.
