Gambill named WCC and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Player of the Week
SAN MATEO, Calif. – BYU center fielder Cole Gambill has been named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performance last week against Utah Tech and Santa Clara. Gambill was also honored by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper as one of its National Players of the Week.
The senior from Alpine, Utah, led the Cougars to a 3-1 record, including an 8-5 victory over Utah Tech on Tuesday and a 2-1 series win at Santa Clara over the weekend.
Over the four games, Gambill hit .444, had four home runs, three doubles, scored six runs and had seven RBI. For the week he collected 23 total bases with a slugging percentage of 1.278.
His game winning home run on Saturday in the eighth inning at Santa Clara broke a 4-4 tie and clinched the series win (6-11, 13-8, 5-4) for the Cougars. On Friday night he also led BYU to a win with a double and a home run, while scoring twice and driving in three runs.
Gambill hit safely in all four games, including multiple hits in three of the four outings. His two home runs, three RBI and three runs scored against Utah Tech paced BYU to an 8-5 win.
In 30 games during the 2023 season, Gambill leads the Cougars with 34 runs scored. He is hitting .299 with 19 RBI and a slugging percentage of .579. His 32 hits includes seven home runs and nine doubles.
The WCC Player of the Week Award is the third of Gambill’s BYU career. He also earned the award as a sophomore in May 2021 and as a junior in February 2022. Prior to the 2023 season, Gambill was selected by the WCC head coaches to the All-WCC Preseason Baseball Team for the second year in a row.
The Cougars will open a seven-game home stand at Miller Park beginning Tuesday, April 18, with a game versus rival Utah. In addition to the Utes, the home stretch includes a three-game series with UNC Greensboro (April 20-22) and a conference series with Portland (April 27-29).
All seven games will be broadcast live on the BYU Radio App and simulcast on 107.9 in the northern Utah market. In addition, the games will air live on the BYUtv App, with select games on BYUtv. Check the BYU baseball schedule for details.
