PORTLAND, Oregon – BYU baseball fell to Portland 11-1 in game two of the West Coast Conference series on Friday at Joe Etzel Field.

"Portland is a good baseball team and they did a real nice job of hitting our pitching mistakes today," BYU head coach Mike Littlewood said. " I was really impressed with their starting pitcher Brett Gilles. He had command of all four of his pitches and just carved us up. We just need to put this one behind us and come ready to try and win the series tomorrow.”

Portland (13-5, 1-1) took an early one-run lead in the first inning off a double and a passed ball. The Pilots then blew the game wide open in the second with eight runs on seven hits for a 9-1 lead. Single runs in both the fourth and the seventh innings gave Portland the eventual 11-1 win.

BYU (10-6, 1-1) scored its lone run of the game in the sixth inning on a Andrew Pintar double in the right-center gap that scored Mitch McIntyre from first base.

Portland starter Gillis went seven innings, surrendering just three hits and one run while collection 12 strikeouts for his fourth win of the season.
