SAN MATEO, Calif. – BYU outfielder Cole Gambill was today named the West Coast Conference Player of the Week for his performance last week against Ohio State and ASU. The junior from Alpine, Utah, led the Cougars to a 4-0 record, with wins over the Buckeyes at the Snowbird Classic in Florida and a series sweep of the Sun Devils in Phoenix.

In 17 at-bats over the four games, Gambill had eight hits including two home runs, scored eight runs, had 12 RBI and drew two walks. He produced multiple hits in three of the four games, including two games where he went 3 for 5. He amassed 18 total bases, hit .471 and posted an on-base percentage of .571.

Gambill’s three-run homer versus OSU proved to be the game winner on Monday. Against ASU, Gambill drove in a run in the ninth inning of game one Thursday to give BYU a 4-2 come-from-behind victory. He then had the game-winning RBI in the ninth inning of game two on Friday and wrapped up the series with a career-high six RBI in game three, including a three-run home run.

In seven games this season, Gambill is hitting .310, with nine hits, 12 RBI and nine runs scored in 29 at-bats. He is leading the Cougars in slugging percentage at.552.

The WCC Player of the Week Award is the second of Gambill’s BYU career. He also earned the award during the first week of May in 2021. Before the 2022 season, Gambill was selected by the WCC head coaches to the 2022 All-WCC Preseason Baseball Team along with teammate Andrew Pintar from Spanish Fork, Utah.

BYU opens its 2022 home schedule with a three-game series versus Milwaukee-Wisconsin, March 3-5, at Miller Park. The Thursday and Friday games are set for 3 p.m. MDT, with the Saturday matchup scheduled for Noon MDT.

All three games will be broadcast live on the BYUtv App as well as the BYU Sports Network—BYU Radio FM 107.9, BYUCougars.com and the BYU Cougars app. Ticket information can be found at BYUtickets.com.
