BYU drops game one at Gonzaga
SPOKANE, Wash. — BYU baseball lost game one of a three game series at Gonzaga 12-1 on Thursday at Patterson Baseball Complex.
“We had some chances early but just couldn’t capitalize,” said BYU associate head coach Trent Pratt. “Unfortunately we made a couple of defensive mistakes that led to big innings. We need to clean up a few things and comeback tomorrow and play well.”
With the score tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Gonzaga (24-13, 12-4) scored four runs on four hits including a home run by Mason Marenco to take a 5-1 lead. The Zags then tacked on five more in the sixth on four hits and a BYU error.
The lone BYU (12-21, 6-7) run came in the top of the third inning. Peyton Cole led off the inning with a single to centerfield and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Cole Gambill then singled to center to drive in Payton and tie the game at 1-1.
The Cougars return to action at Patterson Baseball Complex on Friday, April 23, at 6 p.m. CST, for game two of the series. The game will be broadcast live on the WCC Network, as well as the BYU Sports Network on BYU Radio FM 107.7, BYUCougars.com and the BYU Cougars app.
