Cougars face Utes in three-game series

PROVO, Utah — After beginning the 2021 season with an 11-game road swing through Texas and Oregon, BYU baseball returns to Utah for a three-game series with rival Utah, March 11-13. The first two games of the series are scheduled to be played on Thursday and Friday at Smith’s Ballpark in Salt Lake City, with the final game Saturday at Miller Park in Provo.

First pitch for all three games is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. MT. Games one and two will be streamed by Utah Athletics with game three broadcast on BYUtv and the BYUtv App. BYU Sports Network—BYU Radio FM 107.9, BYUcougars.com and the BYU Cougars app—will broadcast all three games live. Live stats are available through StatBroadcast.

BYU (3-8) is coming off a three-game series with No. 16 Oregon State. The Beavers took all three games in the series, but each game went down to the wire (1-0, 5-3, 4-3) with OSU coming from behind to win two of the three.

Utah (1-8) opens its home schedule after playing six games in California and three in Arizona. The Utes are 1-8 on the year, with a win at Cal State Fullerton and series losses at No. 19 ASU of the Pac 12 and LMU of the WCC.

The Cougars and Utes have previously met 368 times in baseball since the 1948 season, with BYU holding a 246-121-1 series advantage. The last meeting came on May 14, 2019, with BYU defeating Utah 10-3 in Salt Lake. The first recorded athletic event in BYU history was a baseball game between then Brigham Young Academy and the University of Utah in 1895. The game ended in a 3-3 tie with a bench-clearing brawl.

Taking the hill for BYU in game one on Thursday is senior right-hander Easton Walker, who has appeared in three games and started two. In 15.2 innings, Walker has an ERA of 0.57 with 10 strikeouts, while holding opposing hitters to a .143 average. The Utes will start junior right-hander Justin Kelly who has pitched 16.2 innings over three games with an ERA of 4.86 and 13 strikeouts.
