Cougars picked 4th in WCC Baseball Preseason Poll
SAN MATEO, California – Pepperdine received six first-place votes to earn top billing in the 2021 WCC Baseball Preseason Coaches Poll announced Tuesday.
The Cougars earned one first place vote towards a fourth place ranking in the poll selected by a vote of the conference’s 10 head coaches.
The Waves tallied 78 points in the annual poll followed by Gonzaga with two first-place votes towards 67 points. San Diego (63) and BYU (50) each received one first-place vote and were third and fourth, respectively.
LMU and San Francisco finished tied for fifth with 40 points apiece while Portland (38), Santa Clara (30), Saint Mary’s (29) and Pacific (15) round out the preseason prognostication.
The 2020 baseball season was cut short due to the pandemic. While no WCC champion was crowned, Gonzaga was picked first in the 2020 preseason poll. BYU won the 2019 regular season WCC title with a 19-8 record (36-17 overall), while LMU won the tournament title that year.
BYU is scheduled to open its 2021 season with a four-game series at Texas State in San Marco, Texas, Feb. 19-22. The Cougars will then travel to Austin for a four-game series with Texas on Feb. 24-27.
