Laws to Highlight First Pitch Dinner

PROVO, Utah – Vern, Vance and Adam Law will speak at BYU baseball’s sixth annual First Pitch Banquet at the NuSkin Ballroom in Provo on Feb. 1 at 6 p.m. MT.

The event will include remarks from the Laws in addition to a dinner, program and a silent auction featuring professional and BYU memorabilia. Proceeds will benefit the Cougar baseball program.

The Laws represent three generations of professional baseball. Vern was a Cy Young Award winner and All-Star in 1960 with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He pitched for the Pirates for 18 years, finishing with a record of 162-147 and an ERA of 3.77. Vern spent 11 years as an assistant coach at BYU from 1969-79, after which he coached in Japan.

After starting on the BYU baseball and basketball teams, Vance played 12 years in the MLB from 1980-91, playing with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, Montreal Expos, Chicago Cubs and Oakland Athletics. In 1988, the third baseman was named to the National League All-Star team. After his playing days, Vance was named BYU’s head coach, coaching from 2000-12 with a record of 397-348-2.

After advancing up the through the system since being drafted by the Dodgers in 2013, Adam reached AAA ball for the first time in 2018, playing for the Tacoma Rainers, a Seattle Mariners affiliate. The second baseman played for BYU in 2009 and 2012-13, where he was named All-West Coast Conference.
