October Baseball Blog
MORE FALL SCRIMMAGES: Here are the dates for the scrimmages against the local teams in October: Oct. 20 vs. College of Southern Idaho, 2:30 p.m.; Oct. 27 vs. SLCC, 2:30 p.m.; and Nov. 4 at Dixie State, 1:00 p.m.
DEAN’S LIST: SLCC freshman Tyler Dean is the younger brother of Cougar Kyle Dean. Tyler committed to play baseball and be a soccer goalkeeper at Indiana and is doing the same now at SLCC. Former Cougar walk-on Braxton Ipson is now a redshirt freshman first baseman at Dixie State.
NAVY/ROYAL SCRIMMAGE: BYU won, no homers, but the $1 ice cream was a “hit” and several hundred fans got to see the new field at Larry H. Miller Field! Among those in attendance at the Royal intersquad game earlier this month was D.C. Grays VP of Operations Chris Spera from Virginia. Among the many Cougars who have played for the Grays in Washington D.C. is Bo Burrup, whom Spera related always had a big following of fans because he served his mission to Baltimore, Md.
KRINGLEN ON THE SCOREBOARD: We’re used to junior outfielder Keaton Kringlen putting up runs on the scoreboard. Now Kringlen will appear on the scoreboard of an upcoming BYU basketball game. Eighteen BYU athletes are part of the State Farm Insurance sponsored “Name that Tune” promotion on the Marriott Center video board during basketball season. Rumor is that he did a pretty good job.
MORE ON KRINGLEN: Kringlen is the new champion of the 2017 Fall Classic Ping Pong, defeating pitcher Kendall Motes in the championship, 7-0 in the first game and 21-18 in the second game. Last year’s champion was Tanner Chauncey.
NEW TEAM MANAGER: Joseph Langkilde from Pago Pago, American Samoa is the new BYU team manager. Langkilde was an infielder the past two seasons at Salt Lake Community College.
EARLY TUCKETT BIRTHDAY PARTY: “This has been a great journey for me to be part of your lives,” said former BYU baseball coach Glen Tuckett to his former players at last month’s early 90th birthday celebration—Tuckett’s actual birthday is in December. “I’m button-bustin proud of all of you.” Tuckett’s living posterity, except for three great-grandchildren, was all in attendance at the celebration in the Cougar Room at LaVell Edwards Stadium. In case you missed it, here’s the link to the video shown at the tribute.
MORE ON TUCKETT BIRTHDAY: Among those in attendance at Tuckett’s birthday celebration prior to the Wisconsin football game were former BYU basketball coach Roger Reid and dozens of Tuckett’s former players like Tim Anderson, Dick Belliston, Lee Berge, Jeff Bills, Rod Cloward, Ken Crosby, Jeff Ducek, Gary Earnest, Pal Eldredge, Jim Englehart, Tom Fife, Bob Foderaro, Duane Gustafson, Brent Haymond, Dave Heid, Dane Iorg, Frank Lolich, Kim Nelson, and Marc Thomas. Other notable BYU baseball players in attendance were All-Americans Wally Joyner, Paul Cluff and Peter Kendrick. In addition to being presented gifts of a fungo bat from current BYU coach Mike Littlewood, and gloves and pens, Tuckett got a pair of special Lou Gehrig socks.
FOOTBALL AND BASEBALL: With football season in progress, here’s some baseball tidbits relating to football. Former Cougar All-American and Major Leaguer Dane Iorg’s grandson is starting senior offensive guard Keyan Norman of BYU football. Current BYU pitcher Justin Sterner is the nephew of former Cougar O-line coach Garret Tujague, now an assistant coach at Virginia. And as most everyone knows, outfielder Matt Bushman from last year's team is a freshman tight end with the Cougars.
POULSON RETURNS: Former Pitcher Desmond Poulson returned to campus earlier in October for the annual career night sponsored by BYU athletics. A couple years ago Poulson was recruited at the career night by American Logistics (ALC) where he has been employed for a year. This month he returned on two different days as a recruiter for ALC.
