Buffo, Shaver drafted; Hale, Larsen honored again

A pair of junior BYU baseball players were drafted and two other Cougars were selected to the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings All-West Region Team on Wednesday.

Pitcher Maverik Buffo was drafted in the 34th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Toronto Blue Jays and infielder Colton Shaver was drafted in the 39th round by the Houston Astros.

Sophomore outfielder Brock Hale was named to the first team all-region team, while senior catcher Bronson Larsen was a second-team selection.

Buffo, from Salem, tallied a 7-7 record with a 6.01 earned run average, in helping BYU to a 38-21 record and another West Coast Conference crown. Shaver, from Riverton, hit 13 home runs, part of his 36 career homer total, and led the WCC in home runs, RBI and total bases in league games.

Hale, from Mesa, Arizona, led the WCC with a .395 batting average along with slugging and on-base percentage. Larsen, from Fruit Heights, led the league with 16 homers and 63 RBI, breaking the WCC record with four home runs in the tournament.

Larsen was the MVP of the WCC Tournament and was a First-Team All-WCC selection along with Shaver. Hale and Buffo joined Larsen on the All-WCC Tournament Team.

Seth Corry, a November signee  and left-handed pitcher from Lone Peak High School in Highland, was drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the third round.
