Errors prove fatal as BYU falls 9-6 to Oregon
PROVO, Utah - Errors plagued BYU Baseball as it fell to Oregon by a score of 9-6 on Monday at Larry H. Miller Field.
"If you think attention to details aren't important, look at the scoreboard," BYU head coach Mike Littlewood said. "The bottom right showed six errors. Look at the score, and I think they're relatable."
BYU (14-12, 4-2 West Coast Conference) fought back after Oregon (18-8, 5-4 Pac-12) took an early 4-0 lead to tie the game at 5, including a three-run home run from Nate Favero and Daniel Schneemann going 3-5 and recording two RBI. However, due to six errors on the part of the Cougars, only five of Oregon's (18-8, 5-4 Pac 12) nine runs were earned and BYU was not able to recover.
Two hits and two errors caused the the Cougars to give up two runs in the top of the third inning. An additional error and three more hits plated two more for the Ducks in the top of the fourth before BYU got out of the inning with the bases loaded.
BYU was able to half Oregon’s lead in the bottom of the fifth with a Schneemann base hit, bringing Favero home from third base as Tanner Chauncey advanced to second. Keaton Kringlen followed suit with a single up the middle, sending Chauncey home to bring the Cougar deficit to 4-2.
The Ducks tacked on another run in the top of the sixth off a wild pitch by Riley Gates, but Favero then tied up the ball game in the same inning with a three-run home run over the right field fence. It brought home Colton Shaver and David Clawson and squared the score at 5 runs each.
Rhett Parkinson and Keaton Cenatiempo pitched for BYU in the eighth, and three Ducks came across when a runner was walked with the bases loaded and a pickoff throw attempt didn't connect with Chauncey at first base.
A single by the Ducks in the ninth brought a runner home, lengthening the lead to four, 9-5. Schneemann knocked in Brennon Anderson for one last Cougar run before Oregon sealed the victory.
BYU next hits the road and heads to Stockon, California, to take on Pacific for a three-game series beginning on Thursday, April 6, at 6 p.m. PDT at Klein Family Field.
