Dale Murphy keynotes fourth-annual First Pitch Dinner/Auction

Two-time National League MVP award-winner Dale Murphy will be the keynote speaker at BYU baseball’s fourth-annual “First Pitch” Fundraising Dinner/Auction on Jan. 27 at the NuSkin Ballroom in Provo.
The event starts at 6 p.m. MST, with silent auction and photos followed by a dinner and program including a presentation of the Cameron Tuckett Award by former BYU Coach Glen Tuckett, and an address by Murphy. The Cameron Tuckett Award is given annually to the player who demonstrates consistent effort in academics, citizenship and baseball from the past season.
The First Pitch Dinner will also feature a silent auction and a few live auction items like memorabilia from MLB, NFL, NBA and former Cougar greats.
Murphy was drafted out of Oregon in the first round of the 1974 Major League draft by the Atlanta Braves, played for the Braves from 1976-90 and his No. 3 was retired by the Braves in 1994. He also played for the Philadelphia Phillies (1990-92) and for the Colorado Rockies (1993).
Murphy was a seven-time All-Star in the 1980s, a five-time Gold Glove Award winner, led the National League twice in home runs and RBI in the 1980s and MVP of that league in 1982 and 1983.
Murphy served as president of the Massachusetts Boston Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1997-2000.
Keynote speakers the past three years, respectively, were Jeff Kent, an infielder primarily with the San Francisco Giants; Jeremy Guthrie, a pitcher for the Kansas City Royals; and Jack Morris, former World Series MVP with the Detroit Tigers. The emcee for the event is BYUtv Sports Nation co-host Spencer Linton.
