Another Baker's Dozen Sign

A lineup of MVPs, all-state players and heat-throwing pitchers have inked 13 letters of intent with BYU baseball from the November signing period.

Three junior college players join 10 prepsters signing with the Cougars. The juco players are right-handed pitcher Brady Corless and outfielder Nick Urban from Salt Lake Community College and left-handed pitcher Austin Kamel from Oxnard College in California.

Signing from the Utah preps are pitcher Maverick Buffo from Spanish Fork High, catcher/infielder Colton Shaver from Jordan High. Signing from Arizona are outfielder Ronnie Adair and Cameron Richins both from Mesa.  Signing from Idaho are pitcher/first baseman Bo Burrup from Pocatello and pitcher/infielder Lincoln Clayton from Idaho Falls. Pitchers Jackson Bishop, Seth Huxford and A.J. Jones signed from Missouri, Indiana and Colorado, respectively. And infielder Brian Hsu is from San Ramon, Calif.

Urban played at Dixie College under BYU Coach Mike Littlewood and his staff prior to a church mission to Oklahoma. Huxford is currently serving a mission to Florianopolis Brazil and Burrup finished high school early to begin serving a Spanish-speaking mission to Baltimore, Md.

Batted .345 with 30 hits, nine RBI, three doubles, one triple, one homer, 15-18 in stolen bases and a .406 on base percentage last season. All-City, Scholar-Athlete, 2013 Underclass Honorable Mention, Perfect Game andlettered twice in baseball. Played for the Diamondbacks Elite Scout team the past two summers. Father Raith played baseball for Yavapai CC and UTEP. Recruited by Stanford, TCU, San Diego, San Francisco, St. Mary’s, and Ohio.

Littlewood on Adair – “Ronnie is a dynamic athlete that has played at a very high level. He should be an impact guy for us when he returns from his mission.”

Jackson Bishop, RHP, Outfield, 5-10, 170, Montgomery County High, Jonesburg, Mo.
2013 Underclass Honorable Mention, Perfect Game, First Team All-Eastern Missouri Conference, Second Team All-Area, All-District. Had an 8-1 record with a 1.48 earned run average and 82 strikeouts. Was a team captain, lettering four years in baseball and football and twice in basketball. Played for the St. Louis Gamers. Recruited by Missouri State, Missouri, Mississippi State and Creighton.

Littlewood on Bishop  – “Jackson is a high pitchablity guy that has not even scratched the surface of his potential. We look forward to getting him back from his mission and competing for us on the mound.”

Maverick Buffo, RHP, 6-2, 195, Spanish Fork High, Salem, Utah
Had a 6-2 record and 2.42 ERA last season and was honorable mention all-state 3A. Played for the Utah Bucks. Recruited by Washington State, Oregon State, Utah Valley and SLCC.

Littlewood on Buffo – “We are grateful to keep Mav close to home, rated as the top high school pitcher in the state, he has a big arm and will come in and help us immediately.”

Bo Burrup, LHP/1B, 6-5, 225, Highland High, Pocatello, Idaho
Had an 8-1 record with a 1.10 earned run average and two saves last season in high school. Had a 7-2 record with a 1.60 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 10 games for the Utah Bucks in summer ball. All-state, three-time all-conference in baseball and all-region as a left tackle in football. Captain in both baseball and football. Left this month to serve a Spanish-speaking mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Baltimore, Md. Uncle played for the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and is a member of the hall of fame at the University of Colorado-Pueblo. Recruited by Stanford, Washington, Washington State and Utah Valley in baseball and Boise State and Big Sky schools in football.

Littlewood on Burrup – “Bo is going to be fun to watch here when he returns from his mission. He is a projectable LHP that could hit for some serious power.”

Lincoln Clayton, RHP/ Infield, 5-9, 179, Bonneville High, Idaho Falls, Idaho
All-area, first team all-conference in football as a running back, wide receiver and defensive back. Ran an 11.4 in the 100 meters and a 4.54 in the 40.Lettered twice in baseball, three times in football, and once in basketball. Older brother Porter pitches for the University of Oregon. Recruited by Western Washington, New Mexico State, San Diego and SLCC.

Littlewood on Clayton – “Lincoln is a great athlete. He can really run and has been up to 93 mph on the mound. He is very raw so it will be exciting to watch him develop.”

Brady Corless, RHP, 6-2, 210, Salt Lake Community College/Spanish Fork High, Spanish Fork, Utah
  In 2014 he was 2-1 with a 4.50 earned run average in 36.0 innings with 33 strikeouts in 10 starts. In 2013 he was 6-4 with a 2.26 earned run average in 67.2 innings with 61 strikeouts in 12 starts and threw three complete games. All-Scenic West Conference. All-American, Area Code Games, Hard 9 All-Tournament Team, 3A Pitcher-of-the-Year, All-State and All-Region player, high school team was two-time state champions. Recruited by Arizona, Oregon State, San Diego, Utah, New Mexico, Miami, Kentucky and Hawaii.

Littlewood on Corless – “Brady is one of the highest touted players to come out of Utah in awhile. He was chosen to play in the Perfect Game All-American Game and has been great at SLCC. We expect him to come in and be a leader on our staff immediately.”

Brian Hsu, Middle Infielder, 6-1, 175, Dougherty Valley High, San Ramon, Calif.
Batted .364 with three doubles as a junior. All-Diablo Valley Athletic League and second team as a sophomore offensive MVP of the team and co-golden glove for his team. Played summer ball for the EJ Warriors. Lettered once in basketball and twice in baseball. Has lived in Taiwan as a toddler. Recruited by UC Davis and Cal State East Bay.

Littlewood on Hsu – “Brian is a big physical middle infielder. He can really hit and we feel he has the potential to be true shortstop at this level.”

Seth Huxford, RHP, 6-3, 196, Concord High School, Goshen, Ind.
Two time all-state, academic all-state, and led state with 118 strikeouts. Was three time all-Northern Lakes Conference, had a 1.22 ERA and a 10-0 national team top tier record in summer ball. Had a 21-6 career record in high school. No. 2 rated player in Indiana by Prep Baseball Report. Throws in the mid 80s mph and had a three-year record of 24-5 in American Legion ball. Currently serving a church mission to Florianopolis, Brazil. Older brother played at New Mexico Military Institute. Recruited by Louisville, Stanford, and Vanderbilt.

Littlewood on Huxford – “Seth is another great athlete. We are excited to get him on campus and watch him grow as a baseball player. We are lucky to have him here at BYU.”

A.J. Jones, RHP, 6-0, 170, ThunderRidge High, Highlands Ranch, Colo.
Had a 9-1 record with a 2.62 earned run average in 76 innings last season. All-Continental League and honorable mention all-state. Team won state championship. Lettered three times in baseball. Recruited by Oregon State, Nebraska, Kentucky, San Diego State, Utah and Utah Valley.

Littlewood on Jones – “We are excited to get A.J. on campus. He is a super competitor that has already pitched in a lot of big games, including the 2012 state championship.  A.J. will help us immediately.”

Austin Kamel, LHP, 6-7, 225, Oxnard College, Oaks Christian High, Malibu, Calif.
In 2014 he had a 5-3 record with a 1.48 ERA in 67 innings with 61 strikeouts in 10 starts. In 2013 had a 1-2 record with a 2.25 ERA and 29 strikeouts in four starts. Was all-tournament in the Big League Dugout Classic. Played summer ball for the Santa Barbara Grizzlies, starting every game. Has been contacted this year by a dozen Major League teams. Mother was on the ski team at the University of Oregon and father played basketball at USC. Has been clocked at 92 mph. Recruited by San Francisco, Iowa, and New Mexico State.

Littlewood on Kamel  – “Austin is a 6-foot-7 LHP that is 87-91 mph with pitchability right now. He’s an imposing figure on the mound and will bring a lot of experience with him.

Cameron Richins, Infield, 5-11, 170, Desert Ridge High, Mesa, Ariz.
Battled .430 with 41 hits, five doubles, three triples and 20 of 20 in stolen bases. Was all-region and second team all-state as a team captain and three time letterman last season. Played for the Arizona Dodgers in summer baseball. Father played baseball for Ricks College.  Recruited by Washington and Pittsburgh.

Littlewood on Richins – “Cam is an explosive infielder that really knows how to play the game.. He plays in a great league. It will be fun to see him grow as a player when he returns from his mission.”

Colton Shaver, Catcher, Infield, 6-1, 215, Jordan High, Riverton, Utah
Hit nine home runs and eight doubles for a plus .542 batting average and was 6-1 on the mound. Was all-state, MVP of Region 3, and academic all-region. Played for the Utah Bucks. Father Greg played football for Mesa State.

Littlewood on Shaver – “Colton has big power potential and will be a great hitter here. Rated as the top position player in the state we are happy he chose to be a Cougar.

Nick Urban, Outfield, 6-2, 175, Salt Lake Community College/Dixie State College/Arbor View High, Las Vegas
A sophomore at SLCC after serving a mission to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Region 18 Honorable Mention in 2014 at SLCC where he batted .291, with three homers, 11 doubles, two triples and 10-for-10 in stolen bases. Played for Dixie State in 2011 where he batted .349 in 16 games. Was the PacWest Player of the Week when he led the league by batting .714 in six games and four starts during Red Storm’s 5-1 week and went 10-for-14 with six runs scored, three doubles, six RBI and three walks for a .929 slugging percentage and a .765 on-base mark. In high school he was all-state, All-Southern Nevada, All-Sunset Conference, Northwest Division Player of the Year and batted .520 with 41 RBI, 10 doubles, 11 home runs and 19 of 19 in stolen bases.

Littlewood on Urban – “Nick comes to us from SLCC but played for us at Dixie before his mission. He is a very polished player that knows exactly what we expect from him.”
