BYU Wins Six Events in Boise

BOISE, Idaho – In the second meet of the season and the first away from Provo, the BYU women’s track and field team performed well at Boise State with six event wins and several impressive performances.

"We had a really nice meet today and improved quite a bit over last week," BYU head coach Patrick Shane said. "We opened up a few more athletes and had some great individual performances."

Junior Nachelle Mackie competed for the first time in 2012 after redshirting in 2011. Mackie, an All-American in 2010, won the 800m in Boise in 2:07.52. Her time would currently rank first in the NCAA by almost three seconds.

Ada Robinson, an All-American in 2011, won the high jump for the second consecutive week by clearing 1.75m. Fellow high jumper and All-American Diana Blauer finished a close second to Robinson with a leap of 1.65m.

In the pole vault, Christen Guenther cleared a season best height of 4.15m. The height currently ranks third in the nation and is tied for the third-best jump in BYU indoor history. Guenther narrowly missed 4.27m on her final attempt of the meet.

"I felt really good about my performance today, especially since it was my first this season," Guenther said. "Trying to clear 4.27m felt good and I came pretty close. Hopefully that height comes later in the season."

Senior Katie Palmer led the team in the distance events with a 4:48.80 victory in the mile. The win marks the first for Palmer in 2012. Teammate Sarah Edwards finished just five seconds behind Palmer, in 4:53.38, to take third.

Shay Baugh took first place in the 5000m in her first race of the season. She took the win in 18:11.46.

Senior Katy Andrews helped end the meet on a high note with a 10:09.77 win in the 3000m. She finished eight seconds ahead of second-place finisher and teammate Madelyn Lowder, who finished in 10:17.74.

BYU continues the indoor season on January 20-21 at the annual Cherry and Silver Invitational at the University of New Mexico.
