Utah Spring Classic Cancelled

SALT LAKE CITY (April, 8, 2011) - Due to the inclement weather and today’s forecast the Utah Spring Classic track & field meet has been cancelled. No make up date is expected to be scheduled.

BYU will still compete in the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State and the Texas Relays this weekend.

Track Sends Athletes to Arizona, Texas and Utah Meets

PROVO, Utah -- BYU track and field will continue its season this weekend as the teams send athletes to three meets throughout the country, including the Sun Angel Classic at Arizona State, Spring Break Classic at Utah and the Texas Relays.

“We expect some good marks from our sprinters and power people this weekend, especially in Arizona,” women’s head coach Patrick Shane said. “We will also be taking a number of our better distance runners, including Katie Palmer for the 1500m and Lacey Bleazard for the 800m, and expect good things from them as well.”

The majority of the men’s and women’s athletes will head to Arizona to take on athletes from Arizona, Arizona State, Iowa, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northern Arizona, Oklahoma, Pittsburgh, Purdue, Syracuse and Virginia Tech.

Competition at the Sun Angel Classic will begin on Friday with the hammer throw and pole vault and will continue on Saturday will all other events.

Along with the Sun Angel Classic several athletes will compete at the Mesa Classic at Mesa Community College on Friday evening. About 10 athletes from the men’s and women’s teams will compete at both meets in Arizona.

A few men’s athletes will head to Texas to compete in the prestigious Texas Relays. Teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Baylor, California, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Kansas State, SMU, Texas and Texas A&M will all be in attendance, along with many other colleges from across the nation.

Kelli Ehardt will compete in the pole vault in Texas and will be the only women’s athlete from BYU at the meet.

The Cougars women’s team will send 24 athletes to the Utah Spring Break Classic on Friday. BYU will match up against athletes from Southern Utah, Weber State and Utah.

The meet will be the first ever-home meet run at the brand new McCarthey Family Track and Field complex on the Utah campus. Competition will begin at 1:00 pm MT and live results will be available on runnercard.com.
