Colorado Springs, Colorado (Feb. 28, 2004) -- In true BYU track fashion, the men and women's track team defended their MWC titles to capture their fourth and fifth respective MWC Indoor titles.
The Cougar men won their second straight MWC championship (fourth in five years), while the Cougar women kept their perfect MWC streak intact, winning their fifth MWC crown.
The Cougar men successfully defended their title with 169.50 points. Colorado State finished second with 164 points, followed by Air Force (162.50), Wyoming (85), New Mexico (66) and Utah (10).
The Cougar women scored 224.50 points, to far outdistance second-place San Diego State (129.50). Colorado State finished third with 103 points, followed by Wyoming (88), Utah (67), New Mexico (23), UNLV (18) and Air Force (8).
"We projected we would be about twenty point difference between the two team," women's head coach Craig Poole said, "but we feel this is the best team we have had setting personal records and putting it down when people needed it.
"We scored so many of our girls that it just was amazing. Looking across all our combinations everybody did a wonderful job. Each of them achieved more," Poole said.
Not only did the Cougars capture the team titles, but four BYU athletes were awarded with MWC Indoor individual awards.
The MWC awarded Nic Arrhenius the MWC Male Freshman of the Year and Amy Menlove the MWC Female Freshman of the Year. Senior Michaela Mannova earned the female high point award after scoring 28 points to help the Cougars take the title. In addition she was awarded the female outstanding performance award.

PROVO -- Looking for a repeat of last years Mountain West Conference Indoor Championships the Cougars are heading to Colorado Springs to claim the 2004 Indoor Conference men and women's titles.
The women will be defending their indoor conference title, having finished first in their conference every year since the 1994-95 season.
"We expect to go out and win the championship," women's head coach Craig Poole said. " We are ready and we will perform well."
The men's team looks to add a fourth championships title to their name. The team has won 14 out of the last 15 conference titles.
"We are excited to finally compete all at once against the best the conference has to offer," men's head coach Mark Robison said. "We are going into this meet looking to defend our title and will line-up our runners in order to do that."
Several of the BYU athletes and every single relay team enter the conference championships with the top conference marks this season.
Both of the teams will not leave any event open, but all will be filled by the best BYU has, women's distance coach Patrick Shane said.
"Our job is to score as many points as possible this weekend," Shane said. "Some of our athletes will compete in double or even triple events so we can cover our bases."
Competition starts Thursday with the pentathlon and continues through Saturday afternoon when the MWC will hold their annual indoor awards ceremony.
Please see the extended release for more information on individual events line-ups for both teams.
