Five Cougars receive All-America honors

PROVO, Utah – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced today that five members of the BYU men’s track and field team earned All-America honors at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Championships.

Curtis Carr, Victor Weirich and Jared Ward earned first-team All-America accolades by finishing in the top eight of their respective events at the Championships hosted by the University of Oregon. Carr ran a personal best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (8:40.87) to place fourth, Weirich jumped a personal best in the pole vault (18 feet 2.5 inches) to finish fifth and Ward placed eighth in 10,000-meter run. The three scored all 10 of BYU’s points as the Cougars finished tied for 24th.

Tylor Thatcher and Ryan Waite were awarded second-team All-America honors in their respective events. Thatcher took 14th in the 10,000-meter run while Waite finished 15th in the 800-meter run.

The men’s track and field program has now accumulated 210 outdoor All-Americans in its history.

Five Cougars headed to NCAA Championships

PROVO, Utah - BYU men’s track and field will send five athletes to compete at the 2013 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week in Eugene, Ore. The meet will be held at Oregon’s Hayward Field and begins Wednesday, June 5, and runs through Saturday, June 8.

"The exciting about this nationals for us is everyone has a shot at making first-team All-American and scoring points," BYU coach Mark Robison said. "Everyone competing for us has NCAA championship meet experience, and that goes a long way."

Starting the meet off for the Cougars on Wednesday will be senior All-American Victor Weirich in the pole vault. The meet will be Weirich’s second NCAA outdoor championships. He took fourth to earn first-team All-America honors in 2011.

Ryan Waite and Curtis Carr will also compete in their respective semifinal rounds on Wednesday in the 800-meter run and 3,000-meter steeplechase.  Waite is a four-time All-American and will compete in his third NCAA outdoor championships. Carr is making his NCAA Track and Field Championships debut, but has experience running at the NCAA Cross Country Championships.

On Thursday All-Americans Jared Ward and Tylor Thatcher will compete in the 10,000-meter run finals. In 2012, Ward took fifth place in the same event. Thatcher received All-America honors in cross country and was a qualifier for the 2013 NCAA Indoor Championships.

Ticket Information

Tickets for all four days of the championships are currently on sale. Tickets may be purchased on line at goducks.com/tracktickets, by calling 1-800-WEBFOOT, in person at the Athletic Ticket Office located in the Moshofsky Center or at the Hayward Field ticket windows on the days of the meet.
