PROVO, Utah -- In the final weeks before the Mountain West Conference Championships, the No. 17 BYU men’s track team hosted the BYU Twilight Meet on Wednesday at the Clarence F. Robison Track in Provo.

The Cougars won the meet with a total score of 298.5 to defeat teams from Utah State, Weber State, Utah Valley, Southern Utah and Idaho State. With great weather for the meet, the best in several weeks of competition, coaches and athletes were very pleased with their performances.

"It went really well, we had some great performances, some we would have hoped a little bit better but all together it was a really good day," head coach Mark Robison said. "The tough part now is to narrow it down to who we will take to the conference championships to compete."

Many of the athletes finished in the top two or three spots to contribute to the scoring, including several sweeps of the top three finishes.

Senior Reagan Frey (9:31.53) and freshman Benjamin Johnston (9:36.95) went one and two in the 3000m steeplechase while sophomores Travis Fuller and Jared Rohatinsky took first and third, respectively, in the mile run with times of 4:06.99 and 4:09.37.

Sophomore Victor Weirich and senior Chris Little continued to dominate the pole vault, finishing first and second with marks of 5.25m (17-02.75) each. In the high jump, freshman Zachary Blackham (2.07, 6-09.50), senior Trevor Heiner (2.07m, 6-09.50) and freshman Dakota John (1.97m, 6-05.50) took the second through fourth places.

Track Tunes Up at Twilight Invite

Image

PROVO, Utah -- With the Mountain West Conference Championships on the horizon, BYU’s track teams are getting one final tune up at the Twilight Invitational on Wednesday at the Clarence F. Robison Track in Provo.

“For a lot of our athletes this is it,” head coach Mark Robison said. “With the conference championships in a week or so are finally getting some good weather and it is going to be a really important meet.”

For several athletes this is the last chance to improve their marks before the championships and for some not attending it will be the end of their season. Athletes will compete against mostly local competition from Utah State, Utah, UVU, Southern Utah and Weber State.

Teams are looking to finally enjoy time outside with weather in the mid-60’s and no rain in the forecast. The outdoor season has been tough on most local teams with Utah’s winter lasting into what should be the early spring.

“I think we are finally going to have the weather cooperate,” Robison said. “It looks good and we are really looking forward to being able to enjoy some great performances in great weather.”

Events will get underway at 12 p.m. MT and conclude at approximately 7 p.m. MT. Fans can attend the meet for $5 and those with All-Sports passes can attend for free.
