EUGENE -- The BYU men's and women's track and field teams ended the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Championship meet earning 10 All-America citations over the four-day meet, including three on the final day of competition.

Senior Elizabeth Jackson earned her second All-America honor of the meet after finishing fifth in the 5,000 meters, while Jim Roberts finished seventh in the shot put and Kenneth Andam took seventh in the 100 meters.

"In reality we had a successful meet and there were lots of bright points," BYU women's coach Craig Poole said. "Our finishing place may not be indicative of how good we really are, but we are proud to be among the top teams in the country. Those who went out and competed gave it their full effort. We did have a few mishaps, but that's part of the competition. Overall we're pretty pleased and are looking to build on this next year."

In the 5,000 meters, Elizabeth Jackson came up just short in her quest to pick up her second NCAA title of the meet. Jackson finished fifth in the event with a time of 16:04.72, while senior Courtney Meldrum finished 11th with a time of 16:12.39. Stanford's Laurne Fleshman turned in a blazing-fast final 800 meters to win the event in a time of 15:52.21.

Maret Komorova, the only freshman in the heptathlon, finished ninth in the first heat of the 800 meters -- the final event of the two-day competition -- in a time of 2:32.59 to pick up 661 points and finish 19th in the competition. Komorova, a native of Viljandi, Estonia finished the heptathlon with 4,962 total points, while Kansas State's Austra Skujyte won the NCAA title with 5,857 points.

After clearing 5'08.00" on her first attempt, junior Jeana Bingham failed to clear 5'09.75", finishing 14th in the high jump. Harvard's Dora Gyorffy won the event at a height of 6'02.75".

In the men's 100 meters, BYU senior Kenneth Andam, who was running out of lane seven, overcame a slow start to take seventh place with a time of 10.39.

Senior Jim Roberts advanced to the final round of the shot put with a mark of 61'00.00", but was unable to improve on his toss, finishing 7th. Janus Robberts of SMU won the competition with a life-time best 72'01.00" to record the world's longest put of the season, as well as the second best mark in collegiate track & field history.

"We would have like to had a better day and score more points," head men's coach Mark Robison said. "But, overall we came out and finished with four All-Americans and felt good about that."

In team scoring, the BYU women finished 11th with 24 points, while the PAC-10 finished the meet with four teams in the top-eight. USC won the women's competition with 64 points, followed by UCLA with 55 and Arizona with 44 points. In the men's competition, Tennessee picked up one point in the final event, the 4x400-meter relay, to edge TCU for the men's title with 50 points. The Horned Frogs finished second with 49 points, followed by Baylor in third with 36.5 points. The Cougars finished tied for 19th with South Carolina, earning 15 points.
