SAN DIEGO – BYU thrower Dallin Shurts recorded one of the program’s all-time best discus throws during the Cougars’ closing day of competition in the Aztec Invitational at the SDSU Sports Deck on Saturday.

Shurts’ mark of 60.35m/198-0 stands at No. 8 all-time at BYU, surpassing one set by former All-American Brent Patera in 1992. The top-10 throw pushed Shurts to a third-place finish in San Diego and also surpassed his previous personal-best of 58.30m/191-3 set in May 2021 at the BYU Cougar Invitational.

Danny Bryant also threw for the Cougars on Saturday, finishing ninth in the shot put and 12th in the discus. Bryant set an outdoor shot-put personal record at 17.56m/57-7.5, improving on a the mark he set a week ago at the Trojan Invitational.

Texas Relays

The BYU men also wrapped up competition at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin, Texas on Saturday. Caleb Witsken cleared 5.35m/17-6.5 in the pole vault, tying for seventh with Eerik Haamer of South Dakota.

The Cougars’ 4x400 squad edged Texas Tech by 0.44 seconds to take fifth at 3:07.33. Trey Jackson, Jace Jensen, Joshua Taylor and Landon Maxfield combined in the top-5 effort while facing the likes of LSU, Oklahoma State and Colorado.

"The 4x400 ran well and made the final, which isn't an easy thing to do at the Texas Relays," said BYU sprints coach Kyle Grossarth. "That was probably the best early seasion time we've ever run."

BYU will be back to the track at the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, California on April 1-2.
