AUSTIN, Texas – BYU decathlete Dallin Vorkink scored 7544 to finish fifth as multi-events concluded at the 94th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Stadium on Thursday.
Despite finishing Wednesday’s events in 13th, Vorkink persevered to a top-5 overall decathlon placement with top-3 finishes in each of his last four events.
The junior from Kirksville, Missouri finished runner-up in the discus throw with a personal best of 42.13/138-2. Vorkink followed-up the discus by finishing third in both pole vault (5m/16-4.75) and javelin throw (58.24m/191-1), then concluded the day coming in second with a time of 4:28.19 in the 1500m.
At fifth, Vorkink finished over 100 points in front of Oklahoma’s Kristo Simulask and over 300 points ahead of Rice’s Grant Levesque.
With a score of 7544, Vorkink recorded a personal best and the No. 10 all-time decathlon performance in program history, surpassing a 2004 result from the late All-American Curtis Pugsley.
Colten Yardley and Jace Jensen joined Vorkink in competition on Wednesday. Yardley and Jensen took 13th and 26th, respectively in the men’s 400m hurdles. Yardley came within 0.44 seconds of qualifying for the final.
The Cougars continue competition at the Texas Relays on Friday with the men’s 4x100m, 110 hurdles and 100m.
