Martinez posts second-fastest 800 meters as BYU competes in two weekend meets

SEATTLE  Sophomore Shea Martinez posted a 2:04.79 800-meter time, good for fourth-best in BYU track indoor history and second-best in the nation this year as BYU competed in the Husky Classic in Seattle.

“That was an amazing effort for Shea,” BYU head coach Ed Eyestone said. “She ran a smart race and hit her splits perfectly. We're really pleased with her race.”

Martinez qualified for nationals with her winning performance, improving 18 spots in the national rankings from where she stood after her 2:06.50 time two weeks ago in Seattle.

Freshman Madelyn Brooks ran the best mile time for a BYU woman this year at the Husky Classic with a time of 4:46.98.

On the men's side, the combination of Korey Smith, Shaquille Walker, Tyrell Yardley and Sean Adams won the 4x400 meters in with a time of 3:08.73a new indoor school record.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.  Junior Anginae Montverde won the pole vault and posted the 11th-best mark (4.27 meters) in the nation this year as BYU took part in the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque.

“Anginae has showed consistent improvement and had some great jumps the last few weeks,” Eyestone said. "Her performance today was impressive."

Junior Zachary Blackham claimed third place in the high jump with a mark of 2.14. Blackham's jump is BYU's best this season.

Junior Kyle Brown recorded a career-best mark of 5.30 meters in the pole vault, taking third place. Brown's vault is BYU's best this year and tied for 28th-best in the nation.

BYU track and field preps for meets in Seattle, New Mexico

PROVO, Utah  BYU track and field athletes head to the Husky Classic in Seattle and the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico this weekend for their final meets before indoor championships.

The Cougars will return to venues they competed in earlier this year as they attempt to qualify athletes for the MPSF and NCAA Indoor Championships.

The Husky Classic will begin Friday at 4 p.m. PST and can be followed live at gohuskies.com. The Don Kirby Elite Invitational will begin Friday at 4 p.m. MST and can be followed live at golobos.com.

Athletes to watch

Shaquille Walker boasts an undefeated record in 2015, having won races in the 500 meters, 600 meters and 800 meters this season. Walker officially claims the second-fastest 600-meter time (1:17.32) and third-fastest 800-meter time (1:47.44) in the nation this indoor season.

Jason Witt owns the fourth-best time in the 5000 meters this indoor season, a 13:42.08 in Seattle.

Shea Martinez, Madelyn Brooks and Kelsey Brown lead BYU women in the 800 meters this season, each having run the race under 2:11 this indoor season. Martinez posted a 2:06.50 at the UW Invitational, good for 19th in the nation.

Anginae Monteverde comes into this weekend having posted the 21st best mark (4.15 meters) in the pole vault at the Armory Track Invitational earlier this season.
