Day 2 Recap

KAHUKU, Hawaii -- Zac Blair shot a final round 73 (+1) to lead BYU to a third place finish Friday at the John Burns Intercollegiate.

The Cougars shot a 54-hole total 883 (+19) to finish in third, their best finish of the season. No. 1 Califonia won the team title among the remaining 16 teams for the third consecutive year going 14-under-par, followed by second place New Mexico (+13).

“I got to hand it to the guys,” BYU head coach Bruce Brockbank said. “We had three birdies on the last hole and that made a big difference for us. Rather than finishing fourth, fifth or sixth, we finished third. I like the way we hung in there.”

Blair converted two birdies during the final round and finished the tournament at one-under-par. His 215 tournament total propelled him to a fourth place finish in the individual standings, 11 strokes behind tournament winner Joel Stalter (-12) of California.

Junior Justin Keiley also had a strong outing for the Cougars, shooting three birdes to finish with a third round 74 (+2). Keiley shot a 54-hole total 218 (+2) to finish the tournament in seventh place in the individual standings.

Competing in his first ever collegiate tournament, freshman Joe Parkinson provided solid play for the Cougars in the five spot. Parkinson shot a final round 77 (+5) and finished the tournament at eight-over-par to tie for 20th.

Junior Jordan Hammer contributed a third round 77 (+5) to finish the tournament tied for 28th at 10-over-par, while sophomore Devon Purser shot a final round 78 (+6) to finish the tournament at 14-over-par.

BYU will look to carry their momentum from the John Burns Intercollegiate to Westlake Village, Calif. as they return to action next Monday and Tuesday at the North Ranch Intercollegiate. The tournament features a 12-team field including West Coast Conference foes Pepperdine and San Diego.

“We’ll see if we can’t get into contention next week,” Brockbank said. “It’s a really challenging, tough golf course, so we’ll have to play our best to be in there and hopefully we will.”
