PROVO -- Six different BYU players scored in double figures as the No. 16 BYU men’s basketball team defeated the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds, 93-57, on Saturday at the Marriott Center.
Sophomore Stephen Rogers led the Cougars with 16 points, going a perfect 11-of-11 from the free throw line. Chris Collinsworth added 11 points and eight rebounds to complement his brother Kyle Collinsworth’s 10 points and three steals.
“It was good to see players shooting well tonight," head coach Dave Rose said. "We need to share the ball, and I also thought we did that really well tonight."
BYU made 50 percent of its shots, getting 23 assists on 30 field goals made. The Cougars doubled up FPU on the boards, snatching 48 rebounds to the Sunbirds 24.
Junior Noah Hartsock scored 14, senior Jimmer Fredette finished with 13 and senior Jackson Emery added four three-pointers for 12 points on a night where none of BYU’s starters played more than 23 minutes.
"I really believe that we have a lot of confidence in the bench players," Rose said. "Consistency from the bench is key."
Emery hit the first three-pointer of the game with 14:46 left until halftime starting a 9-0 run, pushing the Cougar lead to 17-8.
FPU made it close after capitalizing on BYU’s eighth turnover, bringing it to 26-22 with just over five minutes remaining in the half.
Kyle Collinsworth got the crowd energized with a quick steal off a Sunbird defensive rebound under the BYU basket, making it easy for him to drop in the layup for two points with 2:15 on the clock before halftime.
Junior Charles Abouo ended the half in style with a put-back dunk off a missed three-pointer from sophomore Nick Martineau as time expired to cap a 13-0 run. The Cougars held FPU scoreless for the final four minutes while heading into the break with a 44-24 lead.
BYU hit 15-of-28 first half shots for 53.6 percent while limiting the Sunbirds to 36.7 percent in the first half, including just 1-of-12 from three-point range.
In the second half the Cougars would continue to roll, getting on a 14-0 run early to extend their lead to 65-32 with 12:33 remaining.
Fredette made his first three-point shot of the game with 9:13 remaining after being rested for much of the second half. Fredette would heat up quickly, hitting two more threes before sitting down for good with BYU leading 83-43 and 5:27 left in the game.
BYU will open Mountain West Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 5, when the Cougars play at UNLV. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. PT. Cougars to Host Fresno Pacific in Final NonConference Game
No. 16/16 BYU basketball will play its final nonconference game of the season when it hosts Fresno Pacific in a New Years Day matchup on Saturday in the Marriott Center at 7 p.m. MT. The Cougars have won three-straight games — two of which have been on the road — and are 13-1 overall. The Cougars are coming off a 90-82 win at Buffalo in which Jimmer Fredette scored 28 of his season-high 34 points in the second half. For the season he is averaging 24.9 points and 4.4 assists per game. Noah Hartsock scored 19 points at Buffalo and hit a career-best three threes to go with six boards and three blocks. Fresno Pacific plays in the NAIA is 10-3 on the season (the Sunbirds play at UC Santa Barbara on Friday at 2 p.m. PT). Jordan Wild leads Fresno Pacific in scoring and rebounding at 12.8 points and 7.8 boards per game while Deshaun Legree adds 10.6 points and Jerante Rosario adds 10.5 points per game. Fresno Pacific’s Last Outing — Fresno PAcific Defeats Menlo
Fresno Pacific fell behind 14-2 early, but came back to defeat Menlo 64-45 on Tuesday night. Brandon Rowe scored a season-high 22 points in the win.
The Sunbirds forced 26 turnovers, with Jordan Wild picking up eight steals. Wild also scored 11 points, and Jerante Morgan and Kendall Holmes added 10 points apiece. Adam Kado had a game-high six assists.
Menlo (3-9) scored the game’s first 12 points and led 14-2, but FPU (10-3) went on a 28-8 run to close the half. The Sunbirds then locked down the visiting Oaks in the second half, holding Menlo to just six field goals and 27 percent shooting.
Rowe was a force all night for the Sunbirds, contributing on offense and defense. It was a breakout game for the junior guard whose previous season-high was 13 points.
“Brandon played really really well,” said coach Chris Wright. “Hopefully this was a preview of things to come.”
FPU outscored the Oaks 35-12 in the paint and shot 77 percent from the free-throw line.
