PROVO -- In the first home-opening sellout at the Marriott Center since 1982, guard Jimmer Fredette and forward Noah Hartsock led the BYU Cougars (1-0) to a 83-56 victory over the Fresno State Bulldogs (0-1) on Friday night.

“I think that it (the crowd) was great because part of the process is to get all the adrenaline running," BYU head coach Dave Rose said. "And I don’t know anything scientific but we always say you have to have energy to win. That was easy tonight because the guys were pumped, the crowd was great and they didn’t have to create their own energy.”

Fredette finished with 24 points, his 31st 20-point game as a Cougar, while adding eight assists. Hartsock came off the bench to score a career-high 21 points and grab five rebounds.

Forward Charles Abouo also scored in double digits for BYU with 13 points. Abouo also grabbed six rebounds, second on the team only to leading rebounder Chris Collinsworth who finished with seven boards.

Both teams started the game slowly. The Cougars took an early 4-0 lead before the Bulldogs pulled ahead 6-4 at the 14:46 mark. Fredette did not score his first points until nearly seven minutes into the game with the Cougars trailing 7-10.

The defensive struggle continued until the 9:02 mark with the game locked at 18-18. A Jackson Emery three-point basket put the Cougars up 21-18, a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.

Emery’s trey started 27-8 BYU run that put the Cougars up 45-26 to end the half. A Fredette pass to Abouo for a monster slam highlighted the run and shifted momentum the Cougars’ way for the remainder of the half. Fredette also had 10 points during the run.

Fresno State came out quick by scoring five of the first seven points but BYU responded by outscoring the Bulldogs 19-10 in the following six minutes of action. Fredette continued to frustrate the Bulldog defense, putting in six more points early in the half.

Hartsock pushed the Cougar lead to 30-points, 73-43, with a two-point basket with 7:35 remaining in the contest.

Strong play off the bench helped the Cougars finish the game, with Kyle Collinsworth, Nick Martineau and Stephen Rogers, all new to the 2010-11 team, seeing playing time.

“I was really pleased with the second half," Rose said. "There were a lot of guys who came in for us and got comfortable and were able to play at the pace that we wanted to play. Obviously our returners were great. Noah was great, Jimmer was terrific and Charles had an exceptional game.”

BYU outshot Fresno State by a large margin, finishing the game 30-61 from the field (49.2%) while holding the Bulldogs to 20-57 (35.1%). The Cougars also outrebounded their WAC opponent 43-36 and finished with nine more assists.

The Cougars will be back at the Marriott Center on Wednesday, Nov. 17 at 7:00 pm MST as they host the Utah State Aggies.

Looking at Fresno State

Fresno State opens the 2010-11 season at BYU. The Bulldogs were 15-18 overall and 7-9 in the WAC—fifth place—in 2009-10. The team’s top returning player is sophomore center Greg Smith, who averaged 11.5 points and 5.8 rebounds last season. Also back is Stephen Shepp, who started 27 games and averaged 5.5 points per game. In an exhibition against Fresno Pacific, Fresno State started Smith, Nedeljko Golubovic (started one game last season), Jonathan Wills (a transfer from New Mexico who sat out last season) and junior college transfers Tim Steed and Bennie Rhodes. The Bulldogs are coached by Steve Cleveland, who prior to coaching at Fresno State, was BYU’s head coach for eight seasons. Cleveland is 78-81 in five seasons at Fresno State and 216-189 in 13 years as an NCAA Division I head coach.

Fresno State’s Last OUting — Fresno State Downs Fresno Pacific in Exhibition

FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore center Greg Smith led the way with a game-high 16 points and eight rebounds in only 26 minutes of action Saturday night at the Save Mart Center to help propel the Fresno State men’s basketball team to a 71-50 exhibition victory over the NAIA’s Fresno Pacific. Garrett Johnson, a returning sophomore guard from Pomona, Calif., also made significant contributions coming off the bench grabbing six rebounds and scoring 12 points by going 4 for 5 from the field and notched a perfect 3-3 clip at the free throw line. The Bulldogs came out aggressive on the defensive end by not allowing the Sunbirds to score in the first 3:45 of the game. On the night, the Dogs held Fresno Pacific to only 50 points, the fewest by FPU against Fresno State in the past seven seasons, and 31 percent from the field. The highlight of the first half came with 1:35 left when junior guard Tim Steed delivered a perfect pass to Smith for a strong layup and a foul. Smith’s free throw made it 28-16, the Dogs’ largest lead in the first session, and entered the locker room with a 28-19 advantage. The Bulldogs wasted no time getting to work in the second half when junior guard Jonathan Wills flew in from the right base line to tip-in a miss with only nine seconds off the clock. In a test of playing against solely zone defense, Cleveland’s squad kept fighting and pulled away late with the help of back-to-back three pointers from Kevin Olekaibe, a freshman guard from Las Vegas, Nev., which gave the Dogs’ their biggest of the game at 68-45. During the evening, the Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the field and 16 of their 26 baskets came by way of assisted passes.

Series Notes

Friday’s game will be the 18th meeting between BYU and Fresno State with the Cougars owning a 12-5 advantage. BYU won last season’s meeting 72-67 at Fresno State with Jimmer Fredette leading the way with 24 points. Friday’s game also marks Steve Cleveland’s return to the Marriott Center. Prior to taking the reigns at Fresno State in 2005, Cleveland was BYU’s head coach for eight seasons.
