PROVO -- The BYU men’s basketball team started off the new year by extending its winning streak to nine games Saturday, defeating Eastern New Mexico 95-49 in the Marriott Center.
“I was pleased with the way that these guys stepped up and played without Jackson and Jimmer," said BYU head coach Dave Rose. "I thought Mike, Noah and Jonathan played well and got some good shots. We managed the game really well."
Michael Loyd, Jr., led the Cougars with a career-high 17 points on the night, adding two steals. Jonathan Tavernari hit 6-of-7 from the field, tallying 15 points, seven rebounds and two assists.
Charles Abouo and Noah Hartsock led the team on the boards with eight rebounds apiece; Hartsock also added 12 points, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the field.
Hartsock (12), Tavernari (15), Chris Miles (13) and Loyd (17) all scored in double figures as the Cougars improved to 7-0 this season when four players score at least ten points.
BYU (14-1) started the scoring with Noah Hartsock posting up to drain the first bucket. After being fouled at 18:53, Chris Miles made 2-of-2 from the charity stripe to put the Cougars up 4-0 to start the first half. The Greyhounds followed suit by following the next two missed shots to lay them in for two points each to knot the score at four.
The teams traded baskets again to tie the score at six, the Cougars then posting a 14-2 run to put them up 20-8 at the 13:12 mark. In that run, Jonathan Tavernari posted two threes while Hartsock, Miles and Davies added points as well.
With 9:22 left in the first half, Loyd was on the run to complete a fast break play, receiving a down-the-court pass from Lamont Morgan, Jr., and laying the ball in to bring the score to 32-14. Tavernari followed with a fadeaway at the 8:15 mark to bring the score to 34-18.
The Cougars went on another run, this one a 16-2 stretch to end the half as the teams went into the locker rooms with the Cougars leading by 30 at 57-27.
Posting the best field goal percentage in a half this season, the Cougars boasted a 73.3 shooting percentage. That is the best percentage for a half since BYU shot .739 in the second half against Colorado State in the 2008 Mountain West Conference Tournament.
With his fast-paced game, Michael Loyd, Jr. was on the run leading the team with 15 points in the first half, hitting 6-of-6 from the field and 3-of-3 from treyville. In 15 minutes of play, Morgan showed his unselfish style of play posting six assists in the first half. Tavernari posted 12 points in the first half, making 5-of-5 from the field and 2-of-2 from the three-point line.
Brock Zlystra had the crowd on its feet cheering with 6:12 left in the game on a huge one-handed dunk to bring the score to 86-42. Logan Magnusson and James Anderson scored with four and three minutes left in the game, respectively, to give all 11 active players at least two points against Eastern New Mexico (6-7).
"This is a great time of the year, you see all the preseason games and see what all your league opponents have," said Rose. "What comes next is even better, so we’re excited."
The Cougars will open MWC play against the UNLV Rebels Wednesday at 8 p.m. in the Marriott Center.

Cougars Return Home to Face Eastern New Mexico
BYU men’s basketball (13-1) returns to the Marriott Center after three games away from home to take on Eastern New Mexico (5-5) on Saturday, Jan. 2, at 7 p.m. The Cougars will be looking to extend an eight-game winning streak, their best since opening the 2008-09 season at 10-0. The game can be heard live on KSL Newsradio beginning with the pregame show at 6 p.m. MST on 102.7 FM and 1160 AM or via the Internet at KSL.com.

— Jimmer Fredette set BYU single-game records with 49 points and nine threes against Arizona in the Fiesta Bowl Classic in Tucson, Ariz., at the McKale Center. BYU handed Arizona its worst loss at the McKale Center, 99-69.

Looking at Eastern New Mexico
Eastern New Mexico, an NCAA Division II institution that plays in the Lone Star Conference, is 5-5 on the season. The Greyhounds started the year 4-1 before a three-game losing streak. Eastern New Mexico ended the streak with an 82-71 win at Southwestern Oklahoma before losing at home to Texas A&M-Commerce. The Greyhounds are 3-3 at home and 2-2 on the road in 2009-10. Tyler Jefferson leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 12.4 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. He is also tops in field goal percentage (.600) and blocks (14) while shooting .754 from the free throw line. Eastern New Mexico’s Last Outing — Lions Rally Past Greyhounds
PORTALES, N.M. - Jimmie Marshall (Sr., G, Milwaukee, Wis./Iowa Lakes CC) and Reggie Nelson (Jr., G, Tyler, Texas/Tyler HC) each scored 11 points, with Marshall also dishing out five assists and grabbing a career-best five steals, but the Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball team (5-5) dropped a 75-58 decision in Lone Star Conference crossover action to Texas A&M-Commerce (9-1), Saturday night at Greyhound Arena. The Lions took a 27-20 lead on Ronnie Morgan’s free throw with 1:24 left in the opening half, but Marshall connected on a jumper just before the half ended, starting a 17-5 Greyhound run, giving Eastern its largest lead of the game, 37-32, on a Tralyn Harden (So., G, Itasca, Texas/McLennan CC) with 15:39 left in the contest. Commerce followed with a three-pointer from Cardell Hunter and a jumper from Brian Singleton to pull even, but ENMU took the lead right back on a pair of Harden free throws. Ronnie Morgan hit a game-tying jumper with 13:30 left, but Harden gave the Hounds their final lead 58 seconds later on another jumper. The Lions erased the deficit with a 6-0 run, taking a 45-41 lead with 10:03 remaining. The Hounds managed to pull to within two points twice, the final time coming on a Marshall layup with 8:54 left, but the Texas-A&M-Commerce surged to a 14-4 run, seizing a controlling 61-49 lead with 5:13 left. Eastern managed to pull within seven points, but could come no closer as the Lions pulled away for the win. TAMU-Commerce held a 50-35.1 edge in shots from the floor and a 71.4-48.4 advantage from the free throw line. The Lions outrebounded Eastern by a 39-31 margin, but the Hounds held a 14-11 edge on the offensive glass, which they converted into a 12-8 advantage in second chance points. Nelson scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high six rebounds for Eastern. Morgan paced the Lions with 24 points, eight boards, two blocks and three steals.

Free Throw Streaks
Junior guard Jimmer Fredette set a BYU record with 39-consecutive made free throws from Nov. 17 to Dec. 12. Fredette broke the record when he hit his 33rd-consecutive free throw with 16:56 remaining in the second half against Arizona State. He had a streak of 13 straight in the first two games and reached 20-straight before missing after six-straight makes against Nebraska. For the season he is shooting .926 from the line and his career percentage is .875 — second in Cougar history. Tyler Haws is shooting .889 from the line and has hit his last 19 attempts over the last seven games. Jackson Emery has made 12-straight free throws in the last three games.
100 Victories and Counting
With BYU’s 83-65 win over Hawai’i, Dave Rose earned his 100th career victory in his 134th game as BYU’s head coach. He reached the 100-win plateau faster than any coach in BYU history. Roger Reid previously held the record, achieving the mark in 143 games.
