FORT COLLINS -- The BYU men's basketball team (13-2) defeated the Colorado State Rams (5-11) 86-60 to open Mountain West Conference play on Saturday.
“I thought that our focus defensively was great," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "We were sharing the ball effectively and our team was dialed in. We executed on the offensive end as well as the defensive end. We got great minutes from our starters and great help from our bench.”
Senior reigning MWC Player of the Year Lee Cummard led the Cougars in scoring, posting 18 points on the afternoon. Sophomore Jimmer Fredette had 15 points while junior Lamont Morgan, Jr., tallied 11.
The Cougars kicked off conference play with a 6-0 run in the first two minutes of the game. CSU’s only lead of the game was at 13-12 and the final tie of the game was 15-all at the 11:20 mark.
Making adjustments to the defensive play before halftime, BYU was able to shut down the CSU offense, pulling away with a 16-point lead going into the locker room.
The BYU bench helped the Cougars post a 46-30 lead at the half with Lamont Morgan, Jr. scoring nine points while adding two assists and one steal. Charles Abouo had five points and three rebounds while Gavin MacGregor tallied two points, two boards and a block.
“The more time they can get on the floor, the more confident they become and the better they play,” said Rose concerning his bench players.
In the last seven minutes of the half, 14 of the 16 bench points came during a 21-8 run.
Jimmer Fredette led the Cougars in the first half scoring 12 points, dishing out two assists and grabbing two boards. With BYU only three points ahead of CSU, he scored seven points during a 9-2 run to extend the lead to 34-24.
Lamont Morgan, Jr., had his best first half of the season, scoring nine points on 4-for-6 shooting. He also grabbed three boards and two assists in the first half.
The Cougars pulled away in the second half with Cummard leading his team in the second half posting 11 points. He posted 18 total points and eight rebounds on the afternoon. Cummard shot 8-for-10 from the field with 2-for-2 treys.
“We came out playing a little bit harder in the second half,” said Cummard. “We didn’t turn over the ball as much in the second half as we did in the first.”
The Cougars have now posted more than 40 points at the half in eight games, as well as finishing off the game with more than 80 points in nine games.

Cougars Open MWC Play at Colorado State
After ending nonconference action with an 85-64 home win against Western Oregon, 12-2 BYU will open MWC play at Colorado State (5-10) on Saturday at 1 p.m. The two-time defending league champion Cougars are off to their best start since the 1999-2000 season and their only losses this season have come against ranked foes Arizona State (No. 20) and Wake Forest (No. 6). BYU won the league with a 14-2 mark last season and a 13-3 record in 2006-07. The Cougars lead the all-time series against Colorado State 84-46. Looking at Colorado State
Colorado State is 5-10 overall and 0-1 in conference play, coming off an 81-67 loss to TCU in the league opener for both teams. The Rams are in search of their first conference victory since the 2006-07 season after finishing 2007-08 with an 0-16 mark in the MWC. Guard Marcus Walker, the league’s leading scorer last season, is back and averaging a team-high 16.3 points per game. He is followed by forward Andy Ogide (9.9) who leads the team in field goal percentage (.539) and rebounding (7.0). Andre McFarland chips in 9.8 points per game and is the team’s leading three-point shooter, having hit 30-of-61 (.492) in 15 games. Willis Gardner, who exploded for a career-best 23 points in the TCU loss, averages 9.5 points per game while shooting 47.0 percent from the field. As a team Colorado State averages 70.7 points per game while allowing 71.5 points per contest. The Rams shoot 43.2 percent as a team and average 36.1 boards and 11.0 assists per game. Colorado State has recorded wins over Montana, Northern Colorado, New Orleans, Hawai’i and Vermont. Head coach Tim Miles is in his second year guiding the Rams and has a record of 12-35 at Colorado State.
Series Notes
Saturday’s game will be the 131st meeting between the two schools in a series that dates back to 1938. BYU leads the series 84-46 after winning all three meetings last season, including an 89-62 win in the first round of the MWC tournament. The Cougars also recorded a 92-73 home win and a 79-65 victory in Fort Collins last year. The Cougars own a 54-10 record in Provo while the Rams hold a 33-28 advantage in Fort Collins. The Cougars have won 13 of the last 17 games overall, seven of the last eight overall and nine straight in Provo since CSU swept the series in 1998. BYU has won two of the last three in Fort Collins including a 77-69 win in 2006, a 90-78 loss in 2007 and last season’s 79-65 win.
1,000-Point Man
Including a career-high 36 points against Long Beach State and performances of 30 points against Weber State, 28 against Cal Poly and 26 at Tulsa, Lee Cummard now has 250 total points for the season and 1,263 for his career. He is now 19th all-time in scoring in BYU history. Cummard is 22 points from passing Alan Taylor for 19th all-time.
Approaching 1,000 Points
Junior forward Jonathan Tavernari is fast approaching the 1,000-point club. Coming into the season he had 640 career points and with 259 points so far this season, Tavernari is now 101 points from reaching 1,000 for his career.
Downtown Record Watch
With two treys against Western Oregon Jonathan Tavernari has 156 career threes, including 39 this season. He started the season with 117 and has passed Andy Toolson for third place and is eight downtown makes from passing Mike Rose (163) for second. Tavernari also has 426 attempts from downtown, good for second all-time in school history. Lee Cummard has 133 threes for his career, now nine threes from passing Andy Toolson for fourth.
