LOGAN -- Junior college transfer Terrell Lyday had the best game of his college career, at any level, Saturday when he scored 35 points to lead BYU to an 82-73 road win against in-state rival Utah State.
The 6-3 guard made six three pointers, one shy of the BYU record, in nine attempts (11-17 overall) and went 7-8 from the line to carry the Cougars to the win. The 35-point outburst set a new career high and was the most points scored by a Cougar since Russell Larsen scored 36 against Nicholls State in 1993.
BYU improves to 11-2 on the year with the win, its fourth straight and third on the road. The Cougars, 4-2 on the road, won their third straight away game for the first time since the 1993-94 season.
After a Cougar miss on their first possession, Michael Vranes stole the ball and dunked on the other end to give BYU a 2-0 lead. The Aggies tied the game at two on a Bernard Rock layup, but BYU would never again shared the lead, shooting 57 percent in the first half to take a 40-28 halftime advantage.
The Aggies made a run in the early going of the second half, but Lyday closed the door each time the Aggies got within striking distance. After Utah State closed the gap to four points at 47-43, Lyday responded with one of his six treys. Minutes later, another Lyday three gave BYU a 10-point lead at 58-48. When the Aggies went on an 8-0 run to get within four again at 65-61 with five minutes remaining, Lyday scored four straight points and six of BYU's next eight to keep the Cougars in control. Lyday scored 24 of his 35 points in the second half.
Silester Rivers scored 15 points off the bench while Mekeli Wesley added 11and Vranes nine. Todd Christensen scored seven points, all in the early going, in his first start of the year to help the Cougars hot shooting in the first half. For the game, BYU shot 50 percent from the floor and from three-point range while the Aggies shot 39 percent, including 25 percent from behind the arc. Wesley had team highs of eight rebounds and three assists.
Tony Brown, who scored 18 points, led Utah State. The Aggies fall to 9-5 with the loss.

Scouting Utah State
The Aggies are 9-4 overall and, like the Cougars, have won their last three games. The Aggies are a perfect 7-0 at home this year and are coming off a big win over Fresno State, 83-66. The Aggies have won five of their last six games with the lone loss coming at Weber State (86-73). Weber State is the only common opponent the Aggies and Cougars have played so far this year with Utah still remaining on BYU's conference schedule. The Aggies lost to the Utes in Salt Lake City (77-42). Utah State's other loss came against Florida (60-58) on a neutral floor at the Maui Classic in USU's second game of the year. Three Aggies are averaging double figures, led by senior Troy Rolle at 11.5 ppg. Sophomore Tony Brown scores 11.2 and junior Shawn Daniels adds 10.5 points and a team-best 7.6 rebounds per contest. The Aggies are shooting 46 percent from the floor, 32 percent on treys and 61 percent from the line. They are pulling down nearly five more boards than their opponents (37.5 -32.8). The Aggies score 69.6 points per game. USU coach Stew Morrill returns just three letterwinners from last years 15-13 team and has eight newcomers.
Series Notes
This will be the 216th meeting between the two rivals, dating back to 1905. BYU holds the edge in the series with a 130-85 record. The Cougars could pull even in the series in Logan with a win as the Aggies hold a 54-53 edge on their home court. The last time BYU won in Logan was in 1992 (Dec. 4) with the Cougars winning by 10, 93-83. The last game in Logan was a 72-69 Aggie win in 1997 (Nov. 29). The home team has won the last seven games in the series. Coach Cleveland is 1-1 against the Aggies in his two previous seasons. Utah State is BYU's oldest rival and the Cougars' 130 victories over the Aggies is BYU's most wins against any opponent.
Last Meeting
BYU managed a 61-59 win in Provo last Jan. 2 in the last meeting between the two schools. Neither team shot well with BYU making 38 percent of its shots and USU just 29 percent. BYU made all but one free throw (10-11) and Michael Vranes had career highs with 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Cougar effort. Mekeli Wesley and Nathan Cooper added 15 points apiece for the Cougars but they didn't get a lot of scoring from others as Silester Rivers and Mark Bigelow added four points each and Bret Jepsen one basket. Todd Christensen played 17 minutes and did not score, going 0-4 from behind the arc. Wesley had five assists. Donnie Johnson led USU with 14 points and Troy Rolle added 10. Tony Brown had eight points in 25 minutes.
In-State Stats
BYU is 2-0 this year against in-state teams with a 92-64 win over Southern Utah and a 66-53 Cougar Classic victory over Weber State. Saturday's game at Utah State is the Cougars' first in-state road game of the year. BYU will play Utah twice in Mountain West Conference action with the first meeting taking place in Provo Jan. 15. The Aggies are 0-2 this year against in-state foes with road losses at Weber State (86-73) and Utah (77-42). Overall, BYU is 113-112 against Utah, 130-85 against Utah State, 16-9 against Weber State and 3-0 against Southern Utah for a combined 262-206 in-state record.

The only true point guard on the BYU roster, he has team-leading 53 assists (4.4 apg). He is averaging 2.3 points and 3.2 rebounds. He has been plagued by a achilles injury all year and was limited to only 10 minutes against UC Irvine Wednesday and did not record an assist for the first time this year. Montague did not take a shot but made three clutch free throws down the stretch at UCSB. He had two points, four rebounds and eight assists in team- and personal career-high 41 minutes at FIU. He shared team-high five rebounds with Wesley at South Alabama while handing out four assists. He matched his season high with five points vs. South Carolina State and made his second three-pointer of the year (2-6 on the season). After receiving stitches to repair a cut above his eye against ASU, Montague returned and led BYU on a 14-1 run. He dished out a season-high nine assists vs. Weber State and helped hold Wildcat guard Eddie Gill to 2-14 shooting.

BYU Team Notables
Cougar Start among Best in Past 20 Years
BYU has achieved a 10-2 record for only the fourth time in the past 20 years and is off to its best start since 1991-92 when the Cougars also started the season with a 10-2 mark. BYU's best start was a 17-0 beginning to the 1987-88 season that had the Cougars, ranked No. 2 and coming off an 82-64 win over Utah, poised to overtake the No. 1 spot in the nation before an upset loss at Alabama-Birmingham. BYU also started 10-2 in 1980-81, the Danny Ainge-led team that went on to the NCAA Elite Eight.
Streaks
BYU has a three-game win streak and has won eight of its last nine. BYU's longest win streak of the year is five games. BYU's wins over Florida International and UC Santa Barbara are the first back-to-back non-conference road wins since the 1991-92 season (BYU won three straight non-conference away games that year). The two road wins also represent the first time BYU has won two straight road games since defeating San Diego State and Hawaii last year (the only time the Cougars accomplished the feat last year). BYU last won three straight road games in 1993-94 (Cougars had a six-game road streak in 1992-93). BYU is a perfect 7-0 at home this year and has won eight consecutive times at home including last year's regular season-ending win over UTEP (85-64). All eight wins have been by double-digit margins.
Cleveland vs. the Big West
Since Steve Cleveland took over the helm at BYU, the Cougars have played six games against Big West teams and have a 3-3 record. The Cougars are 2-0 this year after defeating UC Irvine (77-66) Wednesday and UC Santa Barbara (57-48) last week. Cleveland is 1-1 against Utah State and UC Irvine, 1-0 against UCSB and 0-1 against Boise State. Last year the Cougars split with Big West teams, winning at home against Utah State and falling on the road at Cleveland's alma mater UC Irvine. Saturday's game against Utah State is BYU's third straight game against a Big West opponent.
Numbers on the Road
BYU is 3-2 on the road this year, having already earned one more win in the opponent's home arena than all of last year (2-10 in true away games). The Cougars are scoring 69.2 for a 3.0 scoring margin. On the road, BYU is shooting .415, including .410 on threes, and .679 from the free throw line. BYU is being out rebounded 37.8-35.2 in its five away games. Mekeli Wesley averaged 17.3 points and six rebounds while leading BYU to a 2-1 record on its last road trip that included stops on the East and West coasts.
