MIAMI -- Scoring eight of his 12 points in the five-minute overtime period, BYU's Michael Vranes helped the Cougars pull away from Florida International Thursday for an 83-75 overtime win.

Improving to 8-2 on the year with the win, BYU almost suffered the same fate it faced Tuesday in a loss at South Alabama when the Cougars lost a double-digit second half lead and trailed the home team entering the final minute of the game. But this time the Cougars were able to even the score with less than a minute remaining when senior forward Silester Rivers completed a three-point play to tie the game at 69. Terrell Lyday's tough perimeter defense on Marsho Fairweather, Florida International's leading scorer, kept Fairweather from getting a good look and his shot fell short of the mark.

"We had some great individual efforts in the game tonight," BYU coach Steve Cleveland said. "It was a great first half by Todd Christensen and Terrell (Lyday) and Matt (Montague) were just nails all game long. Terrell not only scored points but played tremendous defense."

Lyday scored a career-high 26 points to lead all scorers while Christensen chipped in 14, Michael Vranes contributed 12 and Rivers added 10 points and a game- and season-high 11 rebounds in his first start of the year in place of Eric Nielsen. Mekeli Wesley had eight points and seven rebounds while Montague dished out a game-high eight assists.

The Cougars took a 38-36 lead into intermission thanks to Todd Christensen's 14 first half points. Christensen's four three-pointers helped the Cougars match their season high with eight threes in the first half alone. Wesley, BYU's leading scorer on the season, was scoreless in the first 20 minutes but tallied five points right out of the break, including BYU's ninth three-pointer, to start a 10-0 Cougar run that grew to 14-2 when BYU took its biggest lead of the game at 52-38.

But with the Cougars seemingly in charge with a 13-point lead at 56-43, the Golden Panthers turned the tables and scored the next 13 points as part of a larger 18-4 Florida International run to even the score at 56. Even though the Cougars had lost a 10-point lead at South Alabama Tuesday, and eventually the game, the Cougars were able to force overtime against a very athletic Florida International team and allow Vranes the opportunity to provide his heroics.

"I had a gut feeling with about three minutes to go that Michael (Vranes) might be the one who could get his shots off," Cleveland said. "He definitely responded."

Vranes sealed the win in overtime when his steal forced a Florida International foul and his subsequent free throw gave BYU an 81-75 advantage. Two Lyday free throws finished the scoring and gave BYU the final 83-75 margin. The Cougars shot 44 percent for the game while holding the Golden Panthers to 34 percent. BYU set season highs in three-pointers made and attempted, converting on 11 of 22 treys.

Florida International was led by Fairweather with 22 points, while teammates Darius Cook added 20 and Karel Rosario 18. The Golden Panthers fell to 4-5 with the loss.

BYU will take the Christmas break before a game at UC Santa Barbara Dec. 29. The Cougars' next home game is Jan. 5 against UC Irvine.

MIAMI -- After a tough 64-63 loss at South Alabama, BYU will face its second straight Sun Belt Conference opponent in Florida International Thursday in Miami. Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m. Eastern (5:30 p.m. Mountain). The game will be broadcast on KSL Newsradio 1160, with Greg Wrubell calling the play-by-play action and former Cougar player Mark Durrant providing color commentary. After Thursday's game, the Cougars will return home for Christmas before taking a single-game road trip to play UC Santa Barbara on Dec. 29.

Last Time Out

BYU's five-game win streak came to a halt Tuesday when the Cougars fell to South Alabama, 64-63. After Mekeli Wesley hit a leaning three-pointer to give the Cougars the lead at 63-62 with just under 30 seconds remaining, the Jaguars' Brett Gravitt responded with a 12-foot runner to give USA the win. The Cougars trailed by three at the half, 33-30, but out scored the Jaguars 22-11 over the first 12 minutes of the second half to take a 52-42 lead. But Gravitt and Ravonte Dantzler led a Jaguar comeback that improved USA to 3-5 on the year and 2-3 at home. USA shot 49 percent for the game compared to 43 percent by BYU. Wesley led the Cougars with 20 points followed by Terrell Lyday with 15. Eric Nielsen and Silester Rivers added eight points each while Nathan Cooper dished out a career-best seven assists to go with six points.

Scouting Florida International

Florida International is 4-4 on the year, including a 3-1 record at home. The Golden Panthers had a three-game win streak halted Saturday when they lost in overtime to St. Bonaventure (78-70, OT) at the Orange Bowl Classic at the National Car Rental Center in Ft. Lauderdale. Marshod Fairweather led Florida International with 29 points, including three treys in the final 38 seconds of regulation. Darius Cook added a double-double 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Golden Panthers had wins over Illinois-Chicago (59-52), St. Francis (95-76) and Hawaii Pacific (91-50) in its three previous outings. They opened the season at home with a win over Radford (75-73) and a loss to Northern Illinois (98-92) before going to the Hawaii Pacific Thanksgiving Classic where they lost to Fresno State (90-75) and Toledo (75-62) before their 41-point win over host Hawaii Pacific. The Golden Panthers have a lot of new faces on this year's roster with only four players, including two starters, return from last year's 13-16 team that finished third in the Sun Belt Conference (7-7). Returning starter Darius Cook (6-8, Sr., Center) is averaging 16 points and six rebounds in three games but the other returning starter, Carlos Arroyo (6-2, Jr., Guard), has been suspended indefinitely by Coach Shakey Rodrigues for violating team rules. He averaged 16 points in the first five games. Karel Rosario (6-8, Jr. Forward) is adding 12 points and nearly eight rebounds while Marsho Fairweather (6-0, Sr., Guard), a redshirt last year, leads the team at 21.6 ppg. Freshman sensation Jabahri Brown (6-10, Fr., Forward), who averaged 13 points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks over the first seven games, suffered a high ankle sprain and missed the Golden Panther's game Saturday. He is not expected to play Thursday. Overall, five players average double figures. The team shoots 44 percent and averages 77.4 points per game.

Series Notes

This will be first meeting between the two teams. BYU is 1-1 this year versus Sun Belt Conference teams. BYU defeated Denver 81-58 and lost Tuesday to South Alabama, 64-63. Both games were on the road.

Cougar Start among Best in Past 15 Years

BYU is off to its best start in seven years and one of its best in the last 15 years. The Cougars boast a 7-2 record for the first time since 1992-93. Like this season, the Cougars also started 7-1 in 1992-93, but they lost their next three games to fall to 7-4 before conference play started. BYU hopes to not repeat that same trend this year but will have to win on the road to do so as its next two games are away from the Marriott Center. The Cougars started 9-1 in 1991-92 and 1989-90. BYU's best start was a 17-0 beginning to the 1987-88 season that had the Cougars, ranked No. 2 and coming off an 82-64 win over Utah, poised to overtake the No. 1 spot in the nation before an upset loss at Alabama-Birmingham. BYU went on to finish 26-6 in 1987-88; 21-9 in 1989-90; 25-7 in 1991-92; and 25-9 in 1992-93 -- each year earning an NCAA Tournament berth.

Cougars Among Mountain West Conference Leaders

BYU leads the MWC in free throw percentage (.719) and field goal percentage defense (.367) and is second in field goal percentage (.489). BYU also shares the best winning percentage (.778) with Utah and UNLV. BYU has second best scoring margin (+14.1) and is third in scoring offense (76.1), scoring defense (62.0) and assist/turnover margin (1.25). They are second in three-point percentage offense (.415). Individually, Wesley is second with in scoring (19.7) and Lyday 10th (14.0) while Wesley ranks seventh in rebounding (6.1). Montague is third in assists (4.8) and Vranes 10th (3.2) while Cooper (.893) and Wesley (.789) are second and fourth in free throw percentage. Rivers is second from the floor (.600) and Wesley seventh (.553). Vranes (.481),Christensen (.462) and Lyday (.436) rank fifth, six and ninth in three-point shooting and Montague (1.95) and Vranes (1.81) are third and fifth in assist/turnover ratio.

Playing the Percentages

BYU has shot better than 50 percent from the floor in five of its nine games this year. BYU has shot below 40 percent only once this year -- 36.5 percent in its loss at nationally ranked Arizona. The Cougars shot 43 percent Tuesday at South Alabama. While the Cougar offense has been productive, BYU's defense has been solid, holding the opposition below 40 percent shooting (.367). In BYU's two losses, however, Arizona shot .544 and South Alabama .490.

Turning Over a New Leaf

Last year BYU averaged 17.3 turnovers per game to only 12.8 assists. This year's team has nearly reversed the trend, dishing out 17.1 assists per game while turning the ball over 13.7 times per contest. BYU had 18 assists and 15 turnovers Tuesday. The Cougars had a season-high 23 assists Saturday against South Carolina State, surpassing last year's best-effort of 21 in the WAC Tournament upset of TCU. It is the highest assist total since the Cougars handed out 26 assists in a blowout win over Morgan State during the 1995-96 season. The Cougars committed 11 turnovers, its second-best effort of the year, against South Carolina State. The Cougars had a season-best seven turnovers against Denver, its lowest total since 1996-97 (vs. SMU).

Life on the Road

BYU is scoring 68.7 points on the road compared to 79.8 at home. BYU is shooting .444, including .422 on threes (.513, .412 at home). BYU is being out rebounded 36.0-31.3, but at home has the advantage 39.0-33.8.

Streaks

BYU had its five-game win streak snapped Tuesday. It was BYU's longest win streak since a five-game streak during the 1994-95 season. In 1994-95, BYU also had a seven-game streak. BYU is a perfect 6-0 at home this year and has won seven consecutive times at home including last year's regular season-ending win over UTEP (85-64). All seven wins have been by double-digit margins. BYU had a modest one-game road win streak halted at South Alabama Tuesday. The Cougars had defeating Denver of the Sun Belt Conference in its previous road game Dec. 4. BYU has not lost two consecutive games since last season's three-game skid in February at Fresno State, at San Jose State (OT), and home vs. New Mexico.

First Buzzer Beater

After going eight games without much drama at the final buzzer (all double-digit outcomes), BYU came up short in its first close game, falling 64-63 to South Alabama Tuesday. Both team's hit shots in the final 30 seconds to take the lead but a Wesley attempt and Vranes and Lyday tips wouldn't go down for BYU in the final seconds, forcing the Cougars to taste defeat for only the second time this year.

Starters

Last year, BYU coach Steve Cleveland used six different starting lineups over the first seven games because of injuries and while trying to find the right combinations with a group of players who had just come together. This year, Cleveland has gone with the same lineup in each game as the Cougars have a core nucleus of players returning for the first time since Cleveland took over the job three years ago. The players and coaching staff were also able to gain practice and game experience together during a summer trip to Europe in August.

Mekeli Wesley

Mekeli had a game-high 20 points Tuesday, the sixth time in nine games he has scored 20 or more points. He is averaging a team-leading 19.7 ppg and 6.1 rebounds per game. In three road games, he is scoring 23.3 ppg. He averaged 21 points and nine rebounds to earn MWC Player of the Week honors (Dec. 7-11) and was named the Cougar Classic MVP for the second time in his career (also as freshman). After averaging three rebounds per game in first three contests, he has pulled down 8.2 boards per game over the next five. He recorded his first double-double of the year (fourth of career) with 24 points and 10 rebounds in win over Texas Southern. He scored a season-high 26 points in back-to-back games this year versus Denver and Arizona State. As a freshman he scored 31 points on two occasions. This year he is shooting 55 percent (FGs), 40 percent (3FGs) and 79 percent (FTs).

Terrell Lyday

Lyday scored 15 points against South Alabama -- the eighth time in nine games he has reached double figures. He was a perfect 4-4 on three-point attempts. He joined Wesley on the Cougar Classic All-Tournament team Dec. 10-11 and is showing why he was recruited by Coach Steve Cleveland out of Fresno City College last year to help replace some of the production lost by the LDS Church mission departure of freshman sensation Mark Bigelow. Last year Bigelow averaged 15 points per game to lead the Cougars. Lyday is averaging 14 points per contest while playing a team-high 31 minutes per game. He scored a personal BYU-best 18 points against Arizona and had 17 vs. ASU. He has made a team-high 17 three pointers (43.6 percent). Last year he made more than 100 treys for Fresno City College.

Silester Rivers

Rivers played only 12 minutes Tuesday but scored eight points. He scored game- and season-high 17 points against South Carolina State. Coming off the bench this year, he is third in scoring at 8.8 ppg and is second on the team with 4.3 rebounds (tops with 17 offensive boards). He is shooting a team-best 60 percent (FG). He has scored in double figures four times this year and has led the team in rebounds twice (6 vs. UC Riverside and 9 at Denver).

Michael Vranes

Vranes made 2-4 threes, to score six points Tuesday. He totalled 10 points, six rebounds and a season-high seven assists vs. South Carolina State Saturday. He had a season-high 15 points along with five rebounds vs. Weber State. He is second on the team with 3.2 assists per game from his shooting guard spot (he averaged 2.9 assists last year as the point guard). He is also getting to the glass with 4.0 rebounds per game. He is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.6 ppg and is shooting a team-best 48 percent on threes (13-27). He has made a trey in six of nine games. He has scored in double figures three times, including two of the last three games.

Eric Nielsen

Nielsen had eight points and three rebounds Tuesday. He has been relied upon heavily this year after returning from his LDS Church mission to Russia. Nielsen is is averaging 5.4 points and 4.0 rebounds in 24.6 minutes per game. He makes 52.8 percent of his attempts. After scoring in double figures in the first two games (10, 12) he has not reached double digits in the past seven outings. He grabbed a season-high six boards against Weber State after totalling five on three other occasions this year.

Matt Montague

Montague shared team-high honors with Wesley with his five rebounds Tuesday while handing out four assists, but he did not score, taking only one shot. He matched his season high with five points vs. South Carolina State and made his second three-pointer of the year (2-6 on the season). After receiving stitches to repair a three centimeter cut above his eye against ASU, Montague returned and led BYU on a 14-1 run. The only true point guard on the BYU roster, Montague plays 27.7 minutes per game. He has a team-leading 43 assists (4.8 apg) and has gone to the boards strong (3.6 rpg). He is averaging 2.6 ppg. He made a three-pointer against Texas Southern to break the half time tie and give the Cougars a lead they never relinquished. He dished out a season-high nine assists vs. Weber State and helped hold Wildcat guard Eddie Gill to 2-14 shooting.

Nathan Cooper

Cooper set a career high with seven assists Tuesday (previous best was six vs. Wyoming as a freshman). He is coming off the bench this year after starting 23 of BYU's 28 games last year. He scored a season- and team-high 15 points against Weber State, the third time he has reached double figures. He is averaging 7.9 points and 3.3 rebounds in 20 minutes and making 44 percent of his shots and team-best 25 of 28 free throws (.893). He didn't make a trey in the first five games but went 3-5 at the Cougar Classic and 1-2 vs. SCSU (0-1 vs. USA). He and Vranes are the only Cougars to have fouled out of a game this year (Cooper at Arizona).

Todd Christensen

Christensen did not take a shot Tuesday but had a season-best three assists in 12 minutes. He is sharing point guard duties with Matt Montague after playing shooting guard most of last year. He had a season-high 16 points, including 5-8 threes, vs. South Carolina State. Scored 10 at Denver and nine against Texas Southern. Regarded as the best shooter on the team, Christensen has made 16-30 attempts (.533) with all but four attempts coming from behind the arc (12-26, .462). He has taken seven shots in three road games, making five (.714), including 3-5 threes.
