PROVO -- Mekeli Wesley scored 24 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to record his first double-double of the year and lead BYU to a 76-61 win over Texas Southern in its first game of the 1999 Cougar Classic.

After playing the first 20 minutes even, the Cougars turned a 32-32 tie into a 15-point victory by out scoring the Tigers 44-29 in the second stanza. While Wesley received help from his teammates as the Cougars pulled away in the second half, it was Wesley's first half that kept BYU in position to take over the game.

The junior forward made 7-8 field goal attempts and his only free throw attempt on his way to 15 points in the first 20 minutes. Wesley also pulled down seven of his team-high 10 rebounds in the first half. With his nine-point second half, Wesley has scored 24 points or more in five of BYU's six games.

Other top Cougar scorers included Terrell Lyday with 14 points, Todd Christensen with nine and Nathan Cooper with six. Reserve guard David Nielsen also added six points in his three minutes on the floor, making 1-2 field goals and all four free throws. Matt Montague's three-pointer, his only points of the game, opened the scoring in the second half and the Cougars never looked back, building a 35-32 lead into a 49-39 lead at the 10:59 mark on a Silester Rivers free throw.

Steve Hoyer scored 23 points to pace the Tigers while teammate Chris Miller pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds. BYU out rebounded Texas Southern 42-31 and shot 45 percent to the Tigers 33 percent.

With the win, BYU improves to 5-1 on the year and will met the 4-2 Weber State Wildcats in the Cougar Classic title game Saturday. Weber State, who defeated nationally ranked Utah earlier this year, advanced to the championship game by beating Western Oregon. Texas Southern falls to 2-4 with the loss and will play Western Oregon in the consolation contest.

Weber State (3-2) vs. Western Oregon (1-5) • 5:30 p.m.

BYU (4-1) vs. Texas Southern (2-3) • 7:30 p.m.

**Winners/Losers meet Saturday

Series Notes

This is the first meeting between BYU and Texas Southern. The Cougars have played Weber State 24 times with BYU holding a 15-9 advantage in the series. Last year the Wildcats defeated BYU 83-80 in Ogden in the Cougars' second game of the year. BYU has never faced Western Oregon.

Scouting Texas Southern

The Tigers return five lettermen and three players who filled starting assignments for most of last season. After winning the Southwestern Athletic Conference in 1997-98, Texas Southern lost seven of their last eight regular season games last year to fall out of contention for a second straight title after being within one game of the lead. They finished the year with a 8-19 record as injuries had the Tigers down to eight players at times. This year, TSU will depend on senior center Ifey Anyanwu (6-7, 240), who averaged 12 points and six rebounds last year and leads this year's team with a 17 point average. He also is pulling down 7.3 rebounds. Another returner, 6-3 Patrick Dyse is scoring 16.2 points per game while true freshman Chris Miller (6-3, 220) is adding 11.2 points and 11 rebounds off the bench. The Tigers have wins over Tougaloo (74-54) and Wiley College (96-84) and losses at Lamar (78-62), Iowa (73-51) and vs. Houston (84-80). Head Coach Bob Moreland is in his 25th season at TSU. He is 651-395 overall and 378-319 at TSU. The Tigers have made three NCAA appearances in the 1990s. This year's squad is a strong rebounding team (48 boards per game) but are struggling offensively (43 FG%; 28 3FG%; 49 FT%.

A Look at Weber State

Weber State is 3-2 on the year after a loss at Boise State (71-46) Saturday. The Wildcats other loss came at Alabama (81-61) in the first game of the year while wins include Westminster (75-60), Southern Virginia (102-74) and No. 19 Utah (84-72). All three wins came in the Dee Events Center where the Wildcats have a 26-game home win streak. Joe Cravens is in his first year at the helm of the Wildcat program. Harold Arceneau and Eddie Gill lead the Wildcats with 14.4 and 17.8 points per game averages. Weber has a foreign flavor to its roster, with 6-10, junior forward Ivan Gatto (Italy) and 6-10 freshman Stephan Bachmann (Switzerland). Gatto started slow but has heated up from the outside (team-high 20 points vs. Southern Virginia) while Bachmann (10.4 ppg) has been a consistent double figures addition to the starting lineup since getting his first start against Utah. The Wildcats shoot 45 percent from the floor and 35 percent on threes.

A Look at Western Oregon

The Wolves are 1-5 this year, including 0-2 in the Pac West Conference. In its last year with dual membership in NAIA and NCAA Division II, Western Oregon has losses to Sonoma State, UC Davis, Western Baptist, and conference foes Central Washington and Western Washington. The Wolves defeated Multnomah Bible (76-56). Mike Vanderhoff (6-0 junior guard) averages 18 points to lead Western Oregon and is the only player averaging double figures. Vanderhoff was a third-team NAIA Division II All-American last year in his first season at Western Oregon. Tim Clark (6-8 junior center) adds a team-high 6.5 rebounds per contest. The Wolves have eight juniors, one sophomore and three freshman on the roster. Head Coach Tom Kelly is 180-140 in 10 years at Western Oregon.

Cougars Top Sun Devils

While improving to 4-1 on the year, BYU defeated Arizona State 78-67 Tuesday in the Marriott Center. The win was BYU coach Steve Cleveland's first against a Pac-10 opponent after going 0-8 over his first two years and losing to No. 2 Arizona last week. Mekeli Wesley led the Cougars with 26 points - matching his season high and marking the fourth game he has scored 24 or more points this year. He also added a season-high nine rebounds.

Mekeli Wesley

Mekeli is off to the best start in his career, having scored 24 points or more in four of five games. He had a season-high nine rebounds while matching a season-high 26 points Tuesday against ASU. Last week, Wesley averaged 25 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals. Wesley scored 24 points and had four steals against the Arizona, keeping the Cougars in a close game for more than 30 minutes on Arizona's home court. Wesley more than held his own against the Wildcats highly regarded front line. "I watched the Arizona game and Wesley was the best big man on the court," said Denver coach Marty Fletcher. Wesley continued his strong play in BYU's 81-58 road win over Denver, scoring a season-high 26 points while adding seven rebounds and three steals in 27 minutes. He made 12-19 shots, including 2-3 from three-point range. He has scored 24 points or more in three of BYU's four games this year. Last year his season high was 24 points. As a freshman he scored 31 points on two occasions. After four games he is averaging a 22 ppg while shooting 61 percent (FGs), 57 percent (3FGs) and 86 percent (FTs).

Terrell Lyday

Lyday is showing why he was recruited by Coach Steve Cleveland out of Fresno City College last year to help replace some of the production lost by the LDS Church mission departure of freshman sensation Mark Bigelow. Last year Bigelow averaged 15 points per game to lead the Cougars. Lyday is averaging 15.2 points per contest while playing a team-high 33 minutes per game. Last week he scored a personal BYU best 18 points against Arizona and had 17 vs. ASU. He has made a team-high 10 three pointers. Last year he made more than 100 treys for Fresno City College.

Silester Rivers

Rivers has been slowed with an ankle injury this year, but is playing without a limp and scored 10 points Tuesday in 25 minutes. He is second on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game and leads the team with 10 offensive rebounds. He is making 57 percent of his field goal attempts and has the third best scoring average on the team at 9.6 He is second on the team with five steals.

Michael Vranes

Vranes had eight points and six rebounds vs. ASU. He is averaging 8.2 points and 4.4 rebounds and leads the team making 60 percent of his three point field goal attempts (9-15). Last week he hit two threes early against Arizona to get the Cougars off to a good start but was limited by personal fouls. In Denver, he had a solid overall game with six points, seven rebounds and six assists. He scored his season-high 13 points against Southern Utah. Vranes has made a three-pointer in every game but Denver (0-2).

Eric Nielsen

Nielsen has been relied upon heavily this year after returning from his LDS Church mission this past summer. With a thin front line and Silester Rivers being slowed by injuries, Nielsen is playing the second most minutes after Terrell Lyday (27.4 per game) and has played well, shooting a team-best 61 percent from the floor.

Matt Montague

Montague received stitches above his left eye during Tuesday's ASU game after receiving a three centimeter cut to the bone after falling hard to the floor. He returned from an LDS Church mission this summer. The only true point guard on the BYU roster, Montague is also playing 27 minutes per game and is keeping the Cougar offense running well when he is on the floor. He has a team-leading 22 assists to 13 turnovers on the year and is adding 2.6 boards per game. He has taken 11 shots, making four, and has a 2.8 scoring average.

Nathan Cooper

Cooper is coming off the bench this year after starting in 23 of BYU's 28 games last year. He remains a central part of the Cougar lineup, however, finding ways to contribute in nearly ever facet of the game. He is scoring 7.8 points while also adding 3.4 rebounds in 18.4 minutes. He is the team's best perimeter offensive rebounder with seven offensive boards, trailing only Silester Rivers' 10. He is making 45 percent of his shots and has made 13 of 14 free throws (.929) and had made 13 in a row dating back to last year until he missed his only attempt against Denver Saturday. He was 2-2 vs. ASU. He is yet to make a three-pointer this year (0-5) and is the only Cougar to have fouled out of a game (at Arizona).

Todd Christensen

Christensen is sharing point guard duties with Matt Montague after playing shooting guard most of last year. He had 10 points against Denver -- his season high. Regarded as the best shooter on the team, Christensen has made six of 10 attempts (.600) and is 4-8 from behind the arc. Christensen and Montague have taken a combined 21 shots in four games as BYU's point guards. Christensen is averaging four points and one rebound in 15 minutes. He has only committed two turnovers.

Dan Howard

Howard had his right knee scoped Tuesday. Some loose particles were removed from behind his knee cap. He is expected to be out at least two weeks. He had played in BYU's first four games and was 3-3 (1.5 ppg) and averaged 2 rebounds in 4.8 minutes.

Starting Strong

BYU is off to its best start in seven years. The Cougars had not won the first two games since the 1994-95 season and now boast a 4-1 record for the first time since 1992-93.

Positive Percentages

The Cougars are shooting 51.3 percent from the floor after five games this year, including 40.9 percent of their three-point attempts. They are knocking in 5.4 treys per game. Michael Vranes is shooting 60 percent on threes (9-15), Mekeli Wesley 50 percent (4-8), Todd Christensen 50 percent (4-8) and Terrell Lyday 38.5 percent (10-26). Two players, Eric Nielsen (60.9 percent) and Todd Christensen (60 percent) are shooting 60 percent or better from the floor and Silester Rivers (57 percent) and Mekeli Wesley (56 percent) are also connecting on more than half of their shot attempts. Cooper has made 13 of 14 free throws and had made 13 in a row dating back to last year until he missed his only attempt against Denver Saturday. He was 2-2 vs. ASU and Mekeli Wesley made 14-18 attempts in the ASU game alone. Wesley (82.6 percent) and Lyday (87.5 percent) are also above 80 percent from the line.

Not Even Close

The Cougars are scoring 80.8 points per game while holding their opponents to 67.4 points. All four Cougar wins have been double-figure margins and three were by more than20 points (29, 28, 23). BYU's loss at Arizona was also a plus-20 point final (24).

Last Week Summary

BYU played a tough game against No. 4 Arizona before succumbing in the final 10 minutes to the team rated No. 1 in the USA Today Saragin ratings, 86-62. The Cougars took an 18-10 lead in the first half after three consecutive dunks, one by Mekeli Wesley and two by Terrell Lyday. The Wildcats extended their home win streak to 35 games. BYU shot over 50 percent for the third time this year in its 81-58 win at Denver.

A Look Back at Tucson

The Cougars played a tough game against No. 4 Arizona for 30 minutes before succumbing to the powerful Wildcat team that is rated No. 1 USA Today Saragin ratings. The Cougars took an 18-10 lead in the first half after three consecutive dunks, one by Mekeli Wesley and two by Terrell Lyday. The Cougars were in a close game with 10 minutes remaining but its lack of depth made it tough to stay with the Wildcats, who extended their home win streak to 35 games to give Lute Olson his 400th win. Wesley scored 24 and Lyday 18 to lead BYU.

A Look Back at Denver

BYU shot over 50 percent for the third time this year in its 81-58 win over Denver. The Cougars also pulled down a season-high 44 rebounds.
