SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Tyler Haws and Chase Fischer combined for 28 points and 12 different players scored as BYU men's basketball cruised past Santa Clara 81-46 on New Year's Day on the road.

"Our guys played so well," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "We'll remember this new year's not only were we on the road with a home crowd, but we were dialed in on the offensive end sharing the ball. On the defensive end, we were really good with our responsibilities especially with Clark and Brownridge. It just stayed that way with everyone we put in, even the group of guys who played the last four or five minutes."

Haws and Fischer finished with 14 points, three rebounds and three assists each with Kyle Collinsworth adding eight points, 15 rebounds, six assists and three steals of his own. Anson Winder, Jake Toolson and Skyler Halford each added eight points on the day.

The Cougars (12-4, 2-1 WCC) outrebounded the Broncos (6-8, 1-2 WCC) 45-28 while holding them to 30.4 percent shooting. BYU’s bench also outscored Santa Clara’s bench 33-7.

Collinsworth opened the game with a bucket to give BYU the 2-0 start. The Cougars held Santa Clara without a field goal for five minutes to ignite the 12-1 start that was capped with Collinsworth’s steal and assist to Fischer on the break at the 15:47 mark.

BYU reeled off a big 22-2 run over seven minutes to extend its lead to 36-8 with 7:36 remaining in the half. The run included a three-point play by Haws and two shots from deep by Halford and Toolson. Haws’ fadeaway jumper at the 4:09 mark ended a three-minute drought by the Cougars and pushed the lead to 38-13. Haws' bucket also helped him pass Devin Durrant for fourth place on BYU’s career scoring list.

The Cougars maintained their double-digit lead and entered halftime up 41-22. Haws led all scorers with 14 points with Fischer adding six points and three assists. Collinsworth went into halftime with four points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Five minutes into the second half, Winder and Fischer connected from downtown four times to extend BYU’s lead 53-27. Collinsworth followed up scoring the last four points during the Cougars’ 10-0 run to push the lead to 30 with 13:45 left in the game.

Another 10-0 run included 3-pointers by Halford and Toolson to give BYU its largest lead of the game at 67-29 halfway into the second half. With the safe double-digit lead, the Cougars didn’t look back as they took the game 81-46.

The Cougars stay on the road to play San Francisco on Saturday at 8 p.m. PST. The game will be televised live on ROOT SPORTS and CSN Bay Area and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

Coming off a 97-88 win over Portland, BYU will play its first WCC road game of the season when the Cougars play at Santa Clara Thursday in the Leavey Center at 2 p.m. PST.
