PROVO, Utah – Tyler Haws, Anson Winder and Kyle Collinsworth each scored more than 20 points as BYU beat Portland 97-88 Monday night at the Marriott Center for the Cougars' first conference win this season.

"We played quite a few games here in a short period of time," BYU coach Dave Rose said. "It's a really good win for us, our first conference win. One thing I was impressed with the entire game was how we shared the ball. The ball moved from one side to the other."

Haws, Winder and Collinsworth finished with 24, 22 and 21 points, respectively. Winder made his first start of the season and shot 10 of 14 from the field. Haws added a season-high six assists to go with his 24 points and Collinsworth led BYU with eight rebounds.

Chase Fischer and Skyler Halford both scored in double digits, adding 16 and 12 points.

With the win, BYU (11-4, 1-1) improved to 11-1 all-time against West Coast Conference foe Portland (10-4, 1-1).

A 9-0 run gave the Pilots an early 15-10 lead before the Cougars clawed back with a 10-0 run. Fischer, Winder and Haws scored on three-consecutive possessions to cap the run and give the Cougars a 20-15 lead.

Portland, led by Alec Wintering's 18 first half points, cut BYU's advantage to one point multiple times, but the Cougars never gave up their first half lead since going up 16-15.

Scoring sprees from Haws and Fischer helped BYU extend its first half lead, as the Cougars entered the locker room leading 43-37. Fischer scored BYU's last eight points of the half, including two 3-pointers. He finished the half with 12 points, while Haws had 16.

Winder's first start of the season sparked the Cougars early, as the senior scored seven first half points, all of which came in the game's first 10 minutes.

Seven minutes into the second half, BYU used a 13-0 run to go ahead 67-50. Collinsworth contributed on consecutive possessions, driving and dishing to Corbin Kaufusi for a lay-in, and then putting back a missed shot at the rim.

Halford knocked down a three from the right wing to extend BYU's lead to 17, and after Bryce Pressley put in a jumper for the Pilots, Halford knocked down a three from the left wing to put BYU up 70-52.

A late surge by Portland brought the Pilots within seven points of BYU with two minutes left in the game. Free throws made by Halford and Collinsworth assured that Portland didn't get any closer, as the Cougars pulled away for a 97-88 win.

BYU next plays at Santa Clara Thursday at 2 p.m. PST. The game will be televised on BYUtv and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network and KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM and 1160 AM.
