PROVO, Utah – The BYU men’s basketball team defeated Southern Virginia 101-48 with a strong team effort on Wednesday night at the Marriott Center.

“It was a scrappy game," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "A positive thing for us is we got to play a lot of guys a lot of minutes. For the most part we stayed within what we wanted to do. There were a couple times where we got a little ragged but defensively we stayed within our system.”

Freshman Jake Toolson finished with a game-high 15 points, 5 of 8 from beyond the arc, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals. Tyler Haws contributed 13 points and Isaac Neilson added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists in 16 minutes off the bench.

Luke Worthington finished with a career-high 12 points with Chase Fischer, Anson Winder, and Dalton Nixon adding 10 points each. Frank Bartley IV played an all-around game with four points, six rebounds, seven assists, four steals and two blocks.

Haws and Worthington scored the first seven points with Haws scoring the first bucket of the game on a jumper at the 19:49 mark. Worthington followed it up with two dunks with Winder’s assist on the break and another coming off of Bartley’s steal at the 13:40 mark to extend BYU’s lead to 17-4.

After the Knights put together a 7-0 run to cut their deficit to four at 21-17, the Cougars responded with a 19-5 run that included three shots from downtown by Toolson and a 21-point lead with 2:30 remaining in the half. BYU held SVU without a field goal the last 2:30 of the half and ended the half on a 12-0 run to stay up 49-22.

Haws and Toolson led all scorers with nine points at halftime with Toolson going 3 of 5 from beyond the arc. Bartley led the game in assists and rebounds with five each, while Worthington added eight points and four rebounds.

BYU continued its strong play with a 27-6 run over the first 7:55 of the second half. Winder showed energy on both ends of the court to start the half with the steal and a bucket on one end and a block on the other end. The Cougar run extended their lead to 48 points.

Following a 6-0 run by SVU, Corbin Kaufusi’s free throw and a dunk by Nixon at the 7:11 mark maintained BYU’s 45-point lead. With 5:01 remaining, Toolson assisted Josh Sharp on an alley-oop dunk and was followed by another shot from beyond the arc by Toolson to put BYU up 88-38. Isaac Neilson’s free throw gave the Cougars their largest lead of the night at 56 points with 2:08 remaining and took the game 101-48 on Toolson’s fifth 3-pointer.

BYU shot 54.4 percent from the field, outrebounded the Knights 51-33 and scored 35 points off Sourthern Virginia turnovers.

The Cougars will hit the road for the EA SPORTS Maui Invitational to take on San Diego State on Monday at 6:30 p.m. HST at the Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, Hawaii. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 and broadcast on Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.
