BYU vs. Pacific Notes and Quotes
STOCKTON, Calif. – The BYU men’s basketball team fell 89-82 to Pacific on the road despite Matt Carlino’s 28 points on Thursday.
"Our guys were ready and we came out with a good plan," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "I think our guys had a lot of energy and got off to a great start and then they matched it. They got four or five offensive rebound putbacks to get themselves going. We let them get rolling. We didn't make them make some tough shots to get going."
Carlino added four assists to go along with his season-high 28 points, while Tyler Haws added 20 points before fouling out with 1:08 left in the game.
Skyler Halford put up 14 points and Kyle Collinsworth finished with 10 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Nate Austin grabbed seven rebounds to go with a block and two steals.
BYU got off to a quick 9-0 start with Haws, Halford and Collinsworth each contributing. Pacific responded back with a 12-0 run to take the 14-11 lead until a Collinsworth field goal from the baseline made it a one-point game at the 11:37 mark.
After Carlino connected on a 3-pointer and a jumper, the Cougars retook the 20-17 lead as part of a 12-2 run. Haws’ shot off the glass and Anson Winder’s drive down the lane were included during BYU’s run. The teams traded baskets the rest of the way and the Cougars were led by Carlino's three from beyond the arc in the last 4:16 of the half as BYU went into the break with an 38-35 lead.
Carlino led all players with 14 points, hitting 4 of 6 from beyond the arc, while Haws added nine points and two rebounds. Collinsworth also contributed four points and five rebounds at the half.
The Tigers opened up the second half with a 5-0 run until Haws’ trip to the free-throw line tied it at 40 a piece. Halford’s 3-pointer gave the Cougars a one-point lead with Collinsworth’s layup in transition putting BYU up 47-45. Pacific took back the lead after a 6-0 run with under 14 minutes remaining. Collinsworth answered back with a basket at the other end on three consecutive possessions to keep it a one-point game.
With Pacific extending its lead 62-53, Halford’s jumper and steal by Josh Sharp that led to Haws’ three-point play cut BYU’s deficit to four with 9:39 remaining. After Pacific surged to a 15-point lead at 78-63, Carlino connected on another 3-pointer and converted a three-point play to cut Pacific’s lead to nine. With 2:01 left, Austin’s steal led to a breakaway dunk to make it a two-possession game, but it was not enough to overcome the Tigers’ second-half run.
The Cougars stay on the road to take on Saint Mary’s on Saturday at 5 p.m. PST. The game will be televised live on ESPN2 and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7 FM/1160 AM.

Cougars hit the road to play at Pacific

BYU has won four-straight games to improve to 17-9 overall and 9-4 in WCC play. The Cougars are now second-place in the league standings behind Gonzaga. This week, BYU plays at Pacific on Thursday and at Saint Mary’s on Saturday. Kyle of all trades
In his first season since serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Russia, Kyle Collinsworth is averaging 14.3 points, 8.0 rebounds, 4.9 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He is proving to be one of the most versatile players in the WCC, especially in league games. Through 13 WCC games (as of 2/9/14), he ranks in the top 10 in the four of the five major statistical categories: 8th in scoring, 5th in rebounding, 4th in assists and 1st in steals. He is also top 14 in five other categories: 7th in FG percentage,14th in assist/turnover ratio, 3rd in offensive rebounds, tied for 11th in defensive rebounds and 7th in minutes played.

In 2002, NBA star Allen Iverson didn’t want to talk about practice. With BYU’s leading scorer Tyler Haws, we don’t want to talk about a full game, but just a half. In his career, Haws has scored 20 or more in a half nine times, including seven this season.
30 the old fashioned way
Tyler Haws scored 31 points against Loyola Marymount while hitting 9 of 19 from the field and 13 of 14 from the free throw line. He joined Brandon Davies (33 vs. Weber State on Dec. 15, 2012) as the only other player to score 30-plus points without hitting a three since Keena Young scored 34 vs. UNLV on March 10, 2007. The last BYU wing/guard to score 30 without hitting a three was Travis Hansen on Jan. 5, 2002 when he netted 30 against Pepperdine. Prior to Hansen, the last guard to score 30-plus was Marty Haws, Tyler’s father, on Jan. 4, 1990 vs. Hawaii.
The mythical 5x3 and the 4x3+2
A 5x3 is when a player records at least three in each of the major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). Only one BYU player – Rafael Araujo – has recorded a 5x3 since blocks and steals were first recorded beginning with the 1977-78 season. He did so with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals vs. Wyoming on Jan. 19, 2004. Kyle Collinsworth has joined 11 other BYU players who have fallen one stat shy of a 5x3 and recorded a 4x3+2 (at least three in four of the categories plus two in the other). He had 11 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 blocks and 5 steals at Pepperdine and 20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals vs. LMU. Danny Ainge (2), Lee Cummard (6), Brandon Davies (3) and Greg Kite (2) are the only others to record more than one 4x3+2.
Fantastic freshman
Big man Eric Mika is having one of the top freshman campaigns in BYU history. He is currently ranked in the top 10 in several categories in the BYU record book, including: scoring (8th), rebounding (5th), field goal percentage (2nd), offensive rebounds (2nd), double-figure scoring games (T-5th) and consecutive games scoring in double figures (2nd).
