BYU vs. Gonzaga Notes and Quotes
SPOKANE, Wash. – Tyler Haws finished with a team-high 23 points as the BYU men’s basketball team fell 84-69 to Gonzaga on Saturday.
"We've brought some teams in here with some pretty good records and didn't have a chance that we had tonight," BYU basketball coach Dave Rose said. "We had a chance in the first half where we're within striking distance to come out in the second half."
Kyle Collinsworth added 13 points, seven rebounds and four assists, while Eric Mika ended with 12 points and nine rebounds. Anson Winder came off the bench to contribute seven points with Nate Austin adding six points and four rebounds.
Skyler Halford, Austin and Mika each scored to give the Cougars a 6-4 start four minutes into the game. Gonzaga went on a 13-3 run to lead 17-9 until Collinsworth spun down the lane for a layup. A 7-2 run that included a Mika hook shot and putback brought the Cougars within three with 7:56 left in the half. The Bulldogs pushed their lead back to six with under seven minutes left.
BYU answered back with a 9-3 run with Frank Bartley IV’s putback layup, Collinsworth’s drive to the rim and Haws’ jumper to tie it at 27 at the 4:03 mark. With five seconds left in the first half, Carlino’s layup cut BYU’s deficit by two to make it 35-33 at the half.
Haws led the team with 12 points, while Collinsworth added five points, five rebounds and two assists. Mika also contributed six points and seven rebounds at the half.
Mika started the second half with a three-point play with Haws following it up with a layup to cut Gonzaga’s lead to 43-40 at the 18:05 mark. Collinsworth’s putback put BYU back within four before the Bulldogs pushed their lead to seven at 54-47. Austin recorded a block with 11:54 left, which was followed by a Haws three-point play to make it a four-point game.
Haws and Winder’s trips to the charity stripe cut the deficit back to seven at 64-57 after Gonzaga had extended its lead to 12 on an 8-0 run. Collinsworth’s fadeaway jumper put the game in single digits. With 4:32 remaining, Winder connected on a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 74-65. Collinsworth made a layup with 3:02 remaining followed by Austin’s third field goal with 1:29 left, but BYU couldn't overcome Gonzaga's second-half run.
"It's a tough road swing here and hopefully our guys will have a lot of fight in them when we get back," Rose said.
The Cougars will return to the Marriott Center to host Pacific on Thursday at 7 p.m. MST. The game will be televised live on BYUtv and broadcast on the Cougar IMG Sports Network on KSL Newsradio 102.7/1160 AM.

BYU’s five-game winning streak came to an end on Thursday with a 114-110 triple-overtime loss at Portland. The Cougars will look to bounce back at Gonzaga on Saturday at 7 p.m. PST. Kyle of all trades
In his first season since serving a two-year mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Russia, Kyle Collinsworth is averaging 13.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He is proving to be the most versatile player in the WCC, especially in league games. Through six WCC games (as of 1/19/14), he ranks in the top 13 in the major statistical categories: 7th in scoring, 3rd in rebounding, tied for 2nd in assists, 1st in steals and T-13th in blocks. He is also top 12 in four other categories: 1st in FG percentage, 1st in offensive rebounds, 10th in assist/turnover ratio and 11th in defensive rebounds.
30 the old fashioned way
Tyler Haws scored 31 points against Loyola Marymount while hitting 9 of 19 from the field and 13 of 14 from the free throw line. He joined Brandon Davies (33 vs. Weber State on Dec. 15, 2012) as the only other player to score 30-plus points without hitting a three since Keena Young scored 34 vs. UNLV on March 10, 2007. The last BYU wing/guard to score 30 without hitting a three was Travis Hansen on Jan. 5, 2002 when he netted 30 against Pepperdine. Prior to Hansen, the last guard to score 30-plus was Marty Haws, Tyler’s father, on Jan. 4, 1990 vs. Hawaii.
The mythical 5x3 and the 4x3+2
A 5x3 is when a player records at least three in each of the major statistical categories (points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks). Only one BYU player – Rafael Araujo – has recorded a 5x3 since blocks and steals were first recorded beginning with the 1977-78 season. He did so with 24 points, 9 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 blocks and 3 steals vs. Wyoming on Jan. 19, 2004. Kyle Collinsworth has joined 11 other BYU players who have fallen one stat shy of a 5x3 and recorded a 4x3+2 (at least three in four of the categories plus two in the other). He had 11 points, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 blocks and 5 steals at Pepperdine and 20 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 blocks and 2 steals vs. LMU. Danny Ainge (2), Lee Cummard (6), Brandon Davies (3) and Greg Kite (2) are the only others to record more than one 4x3+2.
Fantastic freshman
Big man Eric Mika is having one of the top freshman campaigns in BYU history. He is currently ranked in the top 10 in several categories in the BYU record book, including: scoring (7th), rebounding (7th), field goal percentage (4th), offensive rebounds (T-5th), double-figure scoring games (T-9th) and consecutive games scoring in double figures (2nd).
Setting the scoring standard
Tyler Haws’ 35-point game against Pepperdine is the most points scored by a West Coast Conference player since Haws scored 42 and 37 last season. Those three games are the only times a WCC player has scored 35 or more in the past three seasons. The last time a WCC player scored 35 or more came on March 25, 2011 as Santa Clara’s Kevin Foster scored 35 against Southern Methodist.
