LUBBOCK, Texas (Feb. 26, 2011)— A doubleheader sweep Friday over Northern Illinois, 3-2, and host Texas Tech, 8-3, in day two of the Brooks Wallace Classic evened BYU’s baseball record.

The Cougars, 3-3, evened their record for the first time this season. In doing so, they handed Texas Tech its first loss of the season.

BYU’s winning pitchers were sophomore Taylor Cole, 2-0, struck out eight in the day’s opener against NIU and Mark Anderson , 1-0, who was effective in his five innings against the Red Raiders. Chunner Nyberg and Matthew Neil picked up saves in the two games as closers on the mound.

“We took advantage of their four errors,” said BYU coach Vance Law of the rematch against Texas Tech. “Mark (Anderson) didn’t have his best stuff, but pitched hard. (Matthew) Neil pitched outstanding and got ahead of hitters. We broke it open in the eighth with (Jaycob) Brugman’s triple. I’m pleased with our effort today, we competed hard.”

Gone are the hitting streaks of 17 and 16 games for Alex Wolfe and Austin Hall, respectively, but each of them were effective in other ways. Wolfe would be credited with the game-winning RBI against Texas Tech in the fifth.

Other Cougars contributed in various ways. For example, behind 2-1 in the fifth against the Red Raiders, Andrew Law poked a two-out, bases loaded single up the middle to score two runs and gave BYU a 3-2 lead.

Freshman Kolton Mahoney kept Tech at bay in relief of Anderson until the veteran Neil took the hill. Jaycob Brugman hit a two-run triple down the left field line in the eighth.

BYU’s Ryan Bernal tripled in both victories Friday.

Freshman right-hander Desmond Poulsen is scheduled to pitch Saturday’s rematch against Northern Illinois as BYU concludes participation in the tournament.

“We are hoping to see changes in some of our performances,” said BYU coach Vance Law. “Our staff pitched well enough last week, but we need better offensive approaches to utilize our talents.”

On the mound for Thursday evening’s opener for the Cougars will be right-hander Chris Capper (0-0, 12.27). Friday’s doubleheader begins at noon with Taylor Cole (1-0, 0.00) on the mound against Northern Illinois, followed by Matthew Neil (0-0, 0.00) in the nightcap rematch against Texas Tech. Saturday’s starter vs. Northern Illinois will be southpaw Mark Anderson (0-0, 1.29).

For the second week in a row BYU will be on artificial turf. The Cougars practiced indoors on Monday and outdoors Tuesday before leaving for Texas.

Austin Hall and Alex Wolfe lead the team with current 15-game hitting streaks. Andrew Law has a current eight-game hitting streak.
