Salt Lake City (April 6, 2001)--Typical of BYU-Utah games, Friday night's finale came down to the last pitch on a 3-2 count with a one-run difference.

The Cougars, now 20-14 overall and 9-5 in the Mountain West Conference, came out on top, sweeping a completion of a doubleheader. BYU won the nightcap, 14-13, as reliever Matt Ward threw eight straight sliders to strike out Utah's hottest hitter Chris Shelton. Ward also pitched in BYU's 12-8 victory.

When the ninth inning started in the nightcap, BYU Coach Vance Law sent freshman reliever Scott Koffman to the mound and soon told Ward to get ready in the bullpen ready to face Shelton in the number four hole. That was when BYU had a 14-11 lead.

Shelton came up after the Utes scored a pair of runs on sacrifice flies. In the fourth inning of the nightcap Shelton had sent Justin Su'a's pitch 420-plus feet over the green monster fence in centerfield for a two-run homer, to give Utah a 9-6 lead.

Su'a rebounded from that homer and struck out four Utes in his remaining three innings as the Cougars battled back for the lead. BYU had taken a 5-0 lead in the first inning, capped by a two-run double by Kainoa Obrey and a three-run double from Michael Davies.

Davies broke the 10-10 tie in the seventh inning when he ironically struck out, but got on base after the Utah catcher missed the pitch on the swing. As Davies beat out a wild throw to first, Seth King was charging home to score the go-ahead run.

King and Jeff Hiestand added to that lead in the two-run ninth when they executed perfect bunts to set up Ty Haguewood's two-run single.

The nightcap had a 40-minute delay from the rain, something which caused game one of the series to be suspended from Thursday.

Earlier on Friday afternoon BYU won the completion of game one, 12-8. Winning that first game was Nate Fernley, just verified as the nation's winningest pitcher, 10-1, in the newly-released NCAA statistics. Fernley pitched BYU to a 10-3 lead on Thursday, but was relieved on Friday by Jeff Mousser.

Mousser was touched by Mike Westfall's solo homer in the seventh and in the eighth by Brit Pannier's two-run homer and Sam Swenson's one-run double. Then BYU brought in pitchers Ward and James Ray to close the door on the suspended game.

BYU added its two runs in the suspended game when Matt Carson hit a two-run single in the seventh.

"We had so many of our players execute in key situations," said Coach Law of the nightcap. "That was the difference in the game." Law called upon relievers Jake Chrisman and Tom Doxey in key situations, too.

Chrisman, whose brother Jed is redshirting for the Utes, faced five batters in the seventh and eighth innings of the nightcap and didn't give up a hit, getting a key strikeout of Swenson. Doxey, a seldom used lefty, only faced Nate Weese, who homered in both games. Doxey walked Weese in the ninth, but the lefty vs. lefty matchup was just what Law wanted to set up Ward for Shelton.

Utah's record falls to 17-18 overall and 6-8 as it readies to host the Cougars on Saturday at 1 p.m. at Franklin Covey Field.

Salt Lake City (April 5, 2001)--A pair of rain delays forced a suspended game Thursday to carry over to Friday at 4 p.m., with BYU leading Utah, 10-3, going into the bottom of the sixth inning.

"Conference rules say we must play every game out unless it is on a get-away day," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "The rule says we must play on the next available date. The umps are to be commended because they tried to get the game in."

The game's start was delayed nearly a half an hour because of rains at Franklin Covey Field. The infield was tarped before pregame warmups, then reapplied 45 minutes after the start of the game.

During those first three innings, BYU pitcher Nate Fernley had a no-hitter going. When play resumed an hour later with BYU leading 5-0, Fernley came back tight. He hit the first Ute batter, walked the second and then surrendered a home run to Nate Weese.

Home runs helped the Cougars build their 5-0 lead with Matt Carson hitting a towering, two-run homer in the first inning and Seth King getting a solo shot in the second. Jeff Hiestand hit a two-run double in the third to score Shane Belliston and Carson.

BYU scored four runs after the rain-delay in the fifth inning off five consecutive hits, capped by Birkeland's two-run double off the left field wall, scoring King and Michael Wirrick. The 10th run scored in the sixth after Belliston hit a lead-off triple to deep centerfield and was singled in by Hiestand.

Elapsed game time thus far was an hour and 44 minutes, but Fernley is done for the weekend. The senior pitched all five innings, giving up two hits, three runs, one walk, three strikeouts and throwing 71 pitches. Game two of the series will be played on Friday after the suspended game is completed. KSRR Radio (1400 AM) will carry the entire broadcast of Friday's action.
