FRESNO -- Host Fresno State won its first home baseball game of the season Saturday afternoon with a 6-3 victory over BYU.

The Cougars, who had won the first two games against the Bulldogs, fell behind 2-0 until Lars Birkeland doubled in the fifth inning and was singled home by Shane Belliston. Then FSU extended its lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the fifth when it got to BYU's pitching.

The Cougars used three freshmen pitchers in the game, with starter Jeff Stearman taking the loss. Stearman had to leave the game in the second inning after lead-off batter Simon Tafoya lined a single off the side of his head. BYU veteran lefty Jeff Stone made his first appearance of the season in the final inning after recuperating from an elbow injury last year.

In BYU's final inning at bat it got a two-run homer from Ty Haguewood, who drove in Tyler Perry.

Fresno State's record is now 2-4.

BYU's record is now 3-2 as it readies for a pair of 2 p.m. games at the University of San Francisco Monday and Tuesday. Fans wishing to log in and view a live webcast of the BYU-USF games can log in at www.USFDons.com/livestats/base.
