LAWRENCE, Kan. — BYU baseball dropped game two of the weekend series with Creighton, 15-5, at Hoglund Ballpark at the University of Kansas on Saturday. 

The series was originally scheduled to start Thursday, with three games at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, but due to inclement weather was shortened to two games and moved three-hours south to Lawrence, Kansas. 

With the win, the Bluejays improve to 6-5 on the year while the Cougars fall to 4-10. 

“Give credit to Creighton. They came ready to play today,” said BYU head coach Trent Pratt. “We struggled early on the mound and the game got away from us. Our guys fought hard in the middle innings to get back in it, but Creighton had too much momentum offensively.”

Creighton jumped out to an early lead with eight runs in the first three innings to take an 8-0 lead. 

BYU got on the board in the fourth inning with four runs on three hits. Third baseman Austin Deming led off with a solo home run to straight away center. After centerfielder Cole Gambill singled up the middle and right fielder Ryan Sepede walked, designated hitter Safea Mauai homered over the right center wall to cut the lead in half, 8-4. 

The Bluejays answered in the top half of the fourth with two runs to increase the lead to 10-4 through four. 

BYU left fielder Cooper Vest homered in the top of the fifth to cut into the lead, but Creighton responded with five runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the inning to blow the game open, 15-5. Due to rain and cold conditions the game was called after six and a half innings. 

Anthony Watts (1-1) got the win for Creighton, while Bryce Robison (1-1) took the loss for BYU. 

Cougars return home to host rival Utah on Tuesday, March 14, at Miller Park in a game scheduled for 5 p.m. MDT. BYU will then begin the final year of WCC baseball at LMU, March 16-18, in Los Angeles.
