STANFORD, California (June 2, 2017)—A career-high eight strikeouts by Hayden Rogers was just what No. 26 BYU baseball needed in a 6-1 victory over Sacramento State on Friday.

Junior Rogers (9-2) and senior tri-captain Tanner Chauncey lead the Cougars (38-20) to stay alive in the elimination bracket of the NCAA regional.  It was the first win for BYU in a regional since it last appeared in 2002 with victories over Maine and Cal State Northridge in Los Angeles.

“Hayden Rogers gave us an incredible outing today,” BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. “I felt totally comfortable giving him the ball. We knew he was throwing well. We just needed to get a couple runners on and see if we could get a hit. Tanner (Chauncey) came up big today.”

The Cougars eliminated the Hornets (32-29) from the tournament in an 18th come-from-behind victory this season.

“I felt like our guys grinded the game out today,” Littlewood said. “The feel in the first two innings didn't feel great. We felt a little bit anxious and I think every hitter felt like they needed to hit a five-run home run every time up. You could feel the pressure mounting.

“We got together in the dugout and just said, 'Hey, everybody have a good at-bat.' Brian Hsu got a nice single to extend an inning and we got a couple of big hits to go up 3-1, and we relaxed a bit. I thought their pitchers did a good job. We just grinded out at-bats all day long.”

BYU knotted the game when Colton Shaver scored on a one-out double by Brennon Anderson after being hit by a pitch to lead off the third inning.

Overcoming adversity was an early theme for the Cougars as that inning continued. Hsu, in the batting order for a flu-stricken David Clawson, singled before Anderson’s double and scored the go-ahead run on Daniel Schneemann’s deep sac-fly.  Anderson, one of several Cougars shuttled to Sunken Diamond when the bus had a flat tire at the hotel, was driven across home plate by Chauncey’s single for a 3-1 lead.

Rogers nearly single-handedly exterminated the Hornets in order striking out two swinging and fielding a bunt in time to an outstretched Chauncey in the fourth.  That time-released momentum surfaced in the sixth to a degree when BYU loaded the bases with no outs. Only one of a potential three runs scored as sac-fly opportunities failed twice, including an inning-ending double play with a 4-1 lead.

A scoring opportunity was foiled for Sac State in the bottom of the sixth with two on, as Schneemann turned an inning-ending double play.

With the table set, Chauncey stroked a one-out double to the left field corner to plate Anderson and the fleet Schneemann from first for a 6-1 lead. Anderson had been hit by a pitch and was caught in a predicament when Schneemann’s shallow centerfield fly was caught and dropped, allowing both to reach base safely.

Mason Marshall polished off the Western Athletic Conference-champion Hornets in the final 2.2 innings, replacing Rogers.

The Cougars live to play another day, facing the loser of the No. 8 Stanford and No. 17 Cal State Fullerton game on Saturday at 1 p.m. PDT, hoping for a doubleheader.

PROVO, Utah—Stanford, California, is the route chosen for No. 26 BYU baseball as it starts on the Road to Omaha at the NCAA Regional hosted by Stanford University on Thursday.

The Cougars, 37-19, will open the tournament at 1 p.m. PDT as the No. 3 seed facing No. 2-seed Cal State Fullerton (34-21) out of the Big West Conference.  The other team facing the top-seeded Cardinal (40-14) in the Stanford Regional is Western Athletic Conference Champion Sacramento State (32-27). Stanford hosts the regional as the tournament's No. 8 overall seed and plays the Hornets at 6 p.m. PDT.  All games can be seen worldwide on ESPN3.com.

BYU's opening game opponent enters the matchup ranked No. 17 in the latest national rankings, while the Cardinal is ranked No. 8 in the nation. The games at the Stanford Regional will be played at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.

The winner of the BYU-Cal-State Fullerton game advances to play the winner of Stanford-Sacramento State on Friday, while the other two teams play later on Friday in the double-elimination tournament. All games in the Stanford Regional will be played at either 1 or 6 p.m. PDT and can be seen worldwide on ESPN3.com.

The Cougars, regular-season tri-champions in the West Coast Conference, won the WCC Tournament last weekend in Stockton, California, on their way to equaling the program's 10th-best season in school history with 37 victories. Riding a four-game winning streak coming off the WCC Tournament, BYU earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Road to Omaha with dominating back-to-back 10-3, 16-3 wins on Saturday in Stockton over fellow tri-champion Gonzaga.

“It's really gratifying for me to see the fruits of our players' labors come to fruition," BYU coach Mike Littlewood said. "We've hit good pitching all year long, and I feel like our mentality is really good right now. Cal-State Fullerton is a very well coached, talented and confident team. It's going to be a battle."

This is BYU’s 12th selection to an NCAA Regional since 1979, the first year that format was adopted. BYU has made two appearances in the College World Series in 1968 and 1971. In 1958 and 1961 the Cougars declined going to the CWS because of issues with Sunday play. If BYU is playing in Game 7 at the Stanford Regional,  that contest will be played on Monday, June 5 at 1 p.m. PDT

The Cougars are scheduled to leave Tuesday.
