Mel attended North Sevier High School where he won four letters in basketball. He won all-region, all-state honors and is considered one of the first all-around athletes to come out of Central Utah. He won BYU Invitational Track Meet All-around championship as a senior, and won his letter in track last year as a frosh. Wilkes is a player with natural ability, but needs seasoning. A physical education major.

One of returning lettermen from championship squad of last season Mel has experience the Cougars will need this year. He is very fast, drives very well and his most effective point-getter is the jump shot. Wilkes is also a track star for the Cougars.
