At BYU

A favorite of the fans as a freshman because of his creative dunks ... statistically his best game was a 12-point, seven-rebound tally against Portland State ... scored a crucial tip-in which BYU locked up the WAC crown ... scored 10 points and has six rebounds as a catalyst in the two-overtime victory against LaSalle in the 1980 Cougar Classic ... his seven points and eight rebounds against Utah State in Logan were key in last season's victory.

Before BYU

Steve averaged 23.8 points and 14.6 rebounds per game at El Modena High School in Orange County ... was voted MVP in Orange County ... named player of the year in Orange County by the Los Angeles Times ... was All-CIF first team, southern section ... named to several All-American high school selections ... in 1978 at the San Diego Superstar camp he won the slam-dunk championship (150 players from the West by invitation) ... reported to have a 34" vertical jump ... selected among the top 75 players in the USA by McDonald's ... coached by Bill Ervin (Oklahoma) at El Modena, where Steve set several records: the most career points (1496), most career rebounds (901), and most points in one season (604).
