Born in San Diego ... parents are William and Celeste ... grandfather William Vargas, Sr., played minor league baseball in the United States before going to the Korean War, but now lives in Puerto Rico ... hobbies include racquetball, cooking and baking/catering, reading, gospel music, computer games and battleship ... majoring in philosophy and minoring in Italian and coaching.

Before BYU

Was two-time All-Mesa League and was perfect in stolen bases ... graduated with honors from Montgomery High where he was coached by Manuel Hermosillo ... selected to the San Diego Union Tribune All-Academic first-team ... batted .481 with 47 hits, 13 doubles and five triples in 2004 ... lettered twice in basketball and three times in baseball ... hit a three-run homer in the semi-final playoff game for his last official at bat in high school ... the Aztecs were league champions and posted a 21-11 overall record and an 8-2 league mark.

Freshman Year 2006

First college hit of his career was a lead-off homerun in the third inning of a 4-3 loss in game three at the University of Pacific ... got the walk-off single with two-outs and full count in the five-run ninth inning over Utah in the MWC Tourney ... turned a rare third-first-third double play against UNLV in the MWC Tourney ... batted 313 in MWC Games ... ended the season with a current three-game hitting streak.

Sophmore Year 2007

Injured his knee in mid-season at UNLV and was out of the lineup for a couple weeks ... led team with nine sac bunts ... had game-winning RBI from a triple in game one and a single in game three vs. Northern Colorado ... did a glove-flip on a dive to end game three against UNC to start a 6-4-3 double play ... turned an unassisted double play (6U3) in the third and another gem in the fourth when he went to his right, dropping down on one knee before throwing a bullet to snuff out the Gonzaga runner in game three.
