Alme Joins BYU Coaching Staff

PROVO -- The BYU women's volleyball program announced the hiring of Maegan Alme Friday. Alme, an Eden Prairie, Minn. Native joins Shay Goulding and the rest of the staff as an assistant coach.

“I am excited to have Maegan become a member of our staff,” said BYU head coach Shay Goulding. “She brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our team and has a lot of passion for the sport. She's ready to come in and work hard in order to become an integral part of our staff.”

Alme comes to BYU after a successful playing and coaching career at Utah Valley University. She spent her freshman year of college at Ricks College in 2001 during the last year the school competed in intercollegiate athletics and then transferred to Utah Valley University (then UVSC) to finish out the rest of her college playing years from 2003-2005.

“I made the decision to come here to BYU because I wanted to be a part of the winning tradition BYU is known for,” said Alme. “I am excited to work with Shay and Shawn [Olmstead], to learn from them and grow as a coach and a person. I will work hard to actively further the success that BYU has had in the past. I already love the girls. They are a fantastic group of ladies and I am excited to get to know them better and be a part of their success here at BYU.”

Growing up in Eden Prarie, Minn., Alme attended high school at Eden Prairie High School and lettered in volleyball all four years, and track and field three years. In her senior year of high school, she was named co-captain of the volleyball team and was nominated for Athena Female Athlete of the Year.

In college she served as the co-captain both her junior and senior seasons at UVU. She set school records for most digs in a single set and in a match as a junior. She was named Defensive Player of the Week multiple times her senior year, and also achieved Female Athlete of the Year and the Wilson Sorenson Spirit of Sport Award her senior year.

Alme helped lead the Wolverines to the DI Independent National Championship her senior year and was named to the All-Tournament team. She was also named the DI Independent Defensive Player of the Year her senior year in 2005.

Switching gears from playing to coaching, Alme stayed at UVU as a student assistant coach Jan. 2006-May 2007 and then served as a volunteer assistant coach at UVU from Aug. 2007-May 2008. During that time she was also a head coach for Club Utah. From Nov. 2008-May 2009 she was the head coach of Club Arrowhead (16-2) in Arizona.

Alme loves the oudoors, spending time with family and friends, playing the guitar, singing and reading. She can't get enough of LOST, 24, The Office, Community, Mexican food and The Man From Snowy River. She is married to Christopher Alme.
