Women's volleyball adds Hyte to coaching staff

PROVO, Utah – BYU women’s volleyball head coach Shawn Olmstead announced the hiring of David Hyte as an assistant coach on Thursday.

“We are very excited to add Dave to our program,” Olmstead said. “I have known Dave for many years and always admired his drive and dedication to the sport and the athletes he coaches. Dave is passionate about BYU and volleyball, which will add tremendously to our team culture. He is continually looking to improve as a coach – which in turn benefits us as a staff and a program. Dave is a perfect addition to BYU volleyball.” 

At BYU, Hyte will join Heather Olmstead and Giuseppe Vinci, who round out the coaching staff.

Hyte comes to Provo after serving as an assistant coach at Houston from 2012-2013 and Idaho State from 2008-2012.

At Houston
During his time at Houston, he helped lead the Cougars to the Conference USA 2012 tournament and a top-four finish. In 2013 he helped his team double its win total from the previous year’s nine wins to 18.

Under his leadership several Cougars received postseason nods, including outside hitters Katie Norris, Kadi Kullerkann, Sarita Micals and middle blocker Chandace Tyron.

At Idaho State
During his time at Idaho State, he helped lead the Bengals to the Big Sky Conference tournament in 2010 for the first time since 2005. The team finished 18-13 overall and 9-7 in conference play with a third-place regular season finish.

Under his leadership several Bengals received postseason nods, including Britta Bartschi-Rhodehouse, a Big Sky Conference All-Tournament team selection in 2010 and Breanne Van Every, a First Team All-Conference honoree in 2011.

Prior to Idaho State
Prior to joining the staff at Idaho State, Hyte gained coaching experience as a volunteer assistant at BYU. He worked primarily with the middle blockers and team blocking. With his leadership, the team finished atop the conference and 14th nationally in hitting percentage. He helped the team to an Elite 8 finish in 2007.

As a player
Hyte was a 2004 graduate of Brigham Young with a bachelor's in communications and an emphasis in advertising and marketing. He competed as a member of BYU's Division I volleyball team from 2002-04. Hyte played an integral role on the 2004 NCAA Championship team and 2003 NCAA Runner-Up team.

He received an associate degree in integrated studies from Utah Valley, where he was a two-year letterwinner in volleyball. He played a part on the 2001 NIRSA National Championship team and 2002 NIRSA National Runner-Up team.

I am honored to be associated with such a tremendous staff and group of young women. I look forward to working as hard as them to be the best we can be. As a former player and student here, it was a privilege to be a Cougar. I’m absolutely thrilled to be back.”
