Day Two of Mountain Region Championships
LAS VEGAS – Two Cougar doubles duos remain after the second day of the ITA Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas.
Freshman Morgan Anderson and junior Aubrey Paul advanced to the third round of doubles play along with senior Megan Price and freshman partner Megan Sheenhan-Dizon after Thursday’s play.
Anderson and Paul bested Ros-Polly Nguyen and Manon Sylvain of New Mexico State, 8-2, to see second round action. There, the BYU duo topped Montana’s Ashley MacKay and Precious Gbadamosi, 8-2.
In similar fashion, Price and Sheenhan-Dizon recorded two 8-2 scores against first and second round opponents, Idaho’s Alejandra Lozano and Almudena, and Utah’s Natasha Smith and Danielle Flores, respectively.
Junior Andie Young and sophomore Kelsie Craig fell to Melissa Cecil and Tahlia Smoke of Air Force, 8-2, in their first round matchup. Lauren Mulhern and Kaley Schultz of Colorado State defeated BYU sophomore Desiree Tran and freshman Lisa Waldron, 8-0.
The third round of the singles main draw featured two Cougars, both facing top seeded opponents. Anderson faced instate rival Utah’s Anastasia Putilina. No. 64 Putilina is the No. 1 seed in the tournament. Anderson displayed top tennis but fell to Putilina, 6-3, 6-4. Tran’s singles play came to an end after falling to No. 4 seed Michelle Okhremchuk of Nevada, 6-1, 6-0.
In the singles consolation bracket, Sheehan-dizon advanced after defeating Anuszkiewics of Colorado in the first round, 6-1, 6-1. Waldron moved onto the second roundafter a first round bye.
Price pushed Malia Wahinepio of Northern Arizona to three sets but dropped the match after a tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-2, 10-6. Wyoming’s Alma Espinosa topped Craig, 6-4, 6-1.
More than 120 women’s collegiate tennis players from 19 schools will showcase their talent this weekend during the ITA Mountain Region Championships. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 3 – 6 in Flushing, N.Y.
